Lyrica Approved to Treat Fibromyalgia

On June 21 the FDA approved Lyrica (pregabalin) as the first drug specifically indicated to treat pain from fibromyalgia. Lyrica is an analgesic (pain relieving) and anit-convulsant medication that is also approved to treat chronic pain. The study results submitted to the FDA for approval showed that 30 to 60% of study participants experienced significant pain relief with Lyrica.

It is not known exactly how Lyrica works to reduce pain in patients with fibromyalgia. It is thought that the drug may effect how neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain) transmit signals from one neuron to another.

The data submitted to the FDA were from two randomized, placebo-controlled trials of about 1800 adults. These trials showed that treatment with Lyrica in doses of 300-450 mg per day reduced pain and improved function in patients with Fibromyalgia, and symptoms became worse when the people stopped taking Lyrica.

There are a number of potential risks and side effects with Lyrica, including but not limited to dizziness and sleepiness, blurry vision, impaired motor function, weight gain, trouble concentrating, swelling of the hands and feet, dry mouth, and potential allergic reactions. Side effects, which are somewhat correlated with dosage, may be significant and impair one's ability to drive.

I have been on Lyrica for about tow mos. I immediately noticed a weight gain. I also immediately noticed an increase in energy, a decrease in the skin burning and in the pain caused by people just touching me. I am virtually pain free unless I exercise, which I do daily in order to fight the weight gain. It has allowed me to start running and lifting weights again, however I have had to ease back into it and I do ache in the evening at about a 5, on a 1-10 scale. But, I want to exercise. The more I exercise, the better I feel, the less I am depressed, the more energy I have and the less I ache over a period of time. I consider Lyrica a success because it has enabled me to get back to my passion in life, which was running. I do recommend it.

I have taken it for a week for knee/leg pain. It seems to offer a 50% reduction in pain. I would like to know if can serve as a general pain releiver. that is, if I have a cartilage tear in the knee for example, would it provide pain relief or is does it specifically target pain resulting from damaged nerves? Anyone know?

I have been on Lyrica for over a year. I have been taking 75mg 3 times a day.?r?nYesterday I went to the doctor after having unrelenting 8-"20" pain for over a month. He uncreased my Lyrica to 100mg 3times a day.?r?nI experienced drowsiness until I got used to it and still have periods of drowsiness when I "veg out" due to pain.?r?nIt has helped a great deal with the burning feeling (like your nerves are exposed at skin level) but has not helped the trigger point nor joint pain.?r?nI HAVE gained a significant amount of weight since starting this med.

Thank you for this comment.
