John at MyPHysicalTherapySpace points out an interesting new study on the effects of physical therapy on low back pain.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of physical therapy exercise sessions and advice vs. sham exercises and advice over a 12 month period for individuals with subacute low back pain (lasting longer than 6 weeks but less than 12 weeks).
Surprising results: "Exercise and advice were each slightly more effective than placebo at 6 weeks but not at 12 months".

I'm with you Dr. Davis. A good PT is worth their weight in gold.
I had PT a few years ago with Kaiser Permanente...It did no good. I then when to a chiropractor. It helped some. I've been going to a PT now since last June and can't believe the difference in pain management.
Why is this PT helping when the other didn't? I believe it's because this therapist utilizes not only exercises & traction, he also does deep tissue massage and adjusts the spine when needed. I wish I'd found him 15 years ago! My only complaint is that it's slow going...but then I certainly can't cure the stenosis and I don't suppose I can undo years of spinal and muscle problems in a few months.
