Debate About Use of Opioids for Chronic Pain

June 11, 2007

Excellent point-counterpoint discussion of the effectiveness vs. risks of using opioids for chronic pain (non-malignant), with Dr. Donnell voicing his strong concerns about too much reliance on opioids.

The main criticisms seem to be the lack of scientific studies about the effectiveness of using narcotic pain killers to treat chronic pain, and not enough discussion about the known risks - including a 10 - 16% chance of addiction.
