Dr. Philip R. Weinstein, director of the neurospinal surgery program, is involved in diagnosing and managing cervical, thoracic and lumbar spondylosis and stenosis. His second major interest is in the area of spinal cord and vertebral tumor management, particularly microsurgery techniques for preserving neurological function. His research interests also include the molecular biology and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion, neurogenesis and functional restoration following spine and brain injury. Weinstein completed his internship and residency at UCSF. He was a neurosurgeon at Loma Linda University Medical Center and the University of Arizona before returning to UCSF in 1982. He is board certified in neurological surgery.
