Neuroscience Medical Director Ravindra Goyal, MD, is leading the effort at Bay Regional Medical Center to develop the region’s premier neuroscience center. With advanced diagnostics, comprehensive neurological care, neurosurgical expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement, the “neuro” team can care for complex spinal conditions and injuries, including spinal tumors, as well as perform fusions, laminectomies, vertebroplasties, kyphoplasties, and other procedures on the spine and neck.

“Bay’s two neurosurgical operating suites were designed as integrated surgical settings to accommodate the BrainLab that allows pre-operative CT or MRI images to be captured in DVD format system,” says Dr. Goyal. “The system continuously provides data back to the surgeon, so we know at all times where we are in relationship to a tumor, for instance, as well as vital structures near the operating site. Images are delivered through ceiling mounted computer monitors that provide on-demand data. The entire system can be moved to allow the neurosurgeon the most ideal trajectory for entering the brain or spinal cord, using minimally invasive techniques,” stresses Dr. Goyal. “At every point, we can see the procedure and anticipate instruments or devices needed for intervention. We have the background, equipment, and expertise to provide our patients with the best possible approach to their spinal problems.”

Bay Regional’s significant investment in equipping two neurosurgical operating rooms, is evidence of their commitment to integrating all the surgical and diagnostic tools needed to perform complex procedures within the skull and spinal cord.

In addition to Bay Regional Medical Center’s status as a Neuroscience Center of Excellence, the hospital has also earned the designation of Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of HealthCare Organizations.
