Patient Testimonials

I was not able to stand or sit for long periods of time, and the pain degraded my ability to concentrate. It’s hard to focus when you feel as if someone is sticking a wire in your back or shocking you with electricity. I’ve been involved in enough near-fatal incidents to realize that I must be here for a reason... Read More >>

A lot of doctors, specialists and surgeons talk down to patients, as if we were children, or as if we do not have the ability to understand the depth and complexity of which they speak. Dr. Gu speaks with me, not to me or down to me. He encourages me to take an active interest in my therapy... Read More >>

What is a Herniated Disc?

Typically affecting adults between the ages of 30 and 50, a herniated disc refers to a slipped or ruptured disc in the spine, most often it occurring in the neck or lower back. Discs are soft, rubbery pads located between the vertebrae (acting as shock absorbers and allowing the back to bed) that make up the spinal column. When the cartilage develops a tear or defect, the nucleus can break through and cause a bulge, putting pressure on the nerves. This pressure can cause pain, numbness, weakness or can cause the sciatic nerve to elicit radiating pain down the buttocks, leg or shin/foot.

Symptoms of a Herniated Disc:

  • Pain in both legs
  • Burning or tingling in the buttocks, leg or foot
  • Pain with movements such as twisting or bending forward
  • Leg weakness
  • Increased pain with prolonged bending, sitting or even sneezing/coughing

Proper Diagnosis comes with finding an experienced, trusted pain management doctor. Testing may include an X-Ray, MRI, CT Scan and/or electro-diagnosis (EMG).

Up to 90% of patients with a herniated disc can be treated successfully without surgery.

Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Herniated Disc

  • Epidural Nerve Block
An epidural nerve block is a corticosteroid injection into the space of the spinal column. This shrinks the swelling around the nerve roots to relieve pressure and pain. Epidural Nerve Blocks are used to effectively decrease pain and inflammation of a herniated disc or other spine-related conditions. They offer substantial pain relief, often used in conjunction with physical therapy, and can be performed within 20-30 minutes in an outpatient setting. Patients can receive up to three injections within a six-month time frame to achieve optimal results.
  • Radiofrequency Neurotomy
Radiofrequencey Neurotomy interrupts the sensory nerve supply to the involved facet joint through the process of thermal denervation. This particular procedure can only be performed once the facet joint has been properly identified as the source of pain. Usually effective after one treatment and only takes 30 minutes in an outpatient facility, Radiofrequency Neurotomy has resulted in excellent outcomes over the years.
