Sacroiliac (SI) joint disorders can cause many problems, including pain from the low back down through the lower buttocks and upper legs, and debilitation which affect patients' ability to work and/or perform activities of daily living. This happens when the SI joint becomes damaged, or its support ligaments become loose or injured. Potential causes of SI joint pain include degenerative disc disease, history of trauma, pregnancy/childbirth, and other unkown reasons.
The SI joint is often overlooked as a source of problems, as clinical testing is often unreliable and traditional surgical approaches to treat the SI joint have yielded marginal results.
