Postural treatments

I have been looking into some treatments using methods of weights, exercises, and gentle traction to help realign my spine and help me develop better posture. At this point, I still hold my head too far forward, and my poor back is starting to curve where it shouldn't to compensate for the imbalance caused by poor posture.

Since I can't say the name of the system I am checking into, I'm hoping some of you may recognize it by my description, and tell me if you have had success with this method of treatment.

The treatment plan consists of exercises done twice daily using a wobble chair, weights to pull shoulders down or twist hips forward, gentle traction to open up the disc spaces, etc. This is all done under the supervision of a chiropractor who does NOT do typical adjustments like you would find in a chiropractic office. In fact, this doctor got out of chiropractic because he wasn't seeing the results with his patients that he was taught he would see and he didn't feel it was honest to have the patients keep coming back time and again with no real lasting improvement.

The whole thing sounds legit, and he says that while he feels he can reduce my pain by 80% over the course of the treatment. I am a skeptic because a lot of my pain originates from cord damage, so how can he fix that. He thinks most of my pain is coming from C4-5 which has a bulge, and also T1-2 which is now bulging. He said also that he thinks the leg stuff is coming from low back rather than my neck. My argument to that is my leg stuff started day one with surgery, and so I am hesitant to believe it is anything other than my neck.

I am trying to be intelligent with this decision, as I certainly don't want anyone to make me worse, and I don't have the money to just throw out if this system doesn't do what he is promising it will do. However, if there can be an 80% reduction in my pain, as he is saying, how can I not give it a try?

Have any of you had success using this type of a system. Ron, can I state the name of it?

Cindy

my honest opinion is do not trust a chiroprator with spines in our condition.yes yes yes!!!!! this guy does sound totally wonderful....but...............just think twice about what you are putting up front for something you dont know to much about!!!!
think about it.......the response has been slow to your question does that not give you an answer as to what the majority of us spineys think.
you know me straight and to the point!!!!!

And I thought you were shy

Just kidding with you Paula, I know you love me! I believe there is a place for chiropractic, but like all avenues of medicine, not every chiropractor is good, and some are in it for the quick money and to see you back over and over and over again in their office. There is a reason a lot of health insurance providers don't cover chiropractic. One thing I used a chiro for in years past was accupuncture, and I can testify that it did help me with the medical issues I had going on. I think some of their therapy methods are much the same as a physical therapist, i.e. electrical stimulation, ice/heat, ultrasound, etc.

Where the controversy comes in is when a chiropractor plops you on a table, wrestles you into a position and forces your vertebrae back into alignment, then sends you on your way with instructions to come back in a day or two to do the whole process again. At this point in my journey, that kind of chiropractic is definitely not on my list of things to do.

However, this method is basically exercises, weights, and traction. I'm just wondering if anyone else has positive or negative experience with this particular setup. To be honest, traction on my already volatile neck scares me. And then there is the addage "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." and don't worry, I'm not jumping on board until I have researched this thing thoroughly.

pettibon system

Hi Cindy,
Haven't talked to u in a while and when i read your post about this system I had to post. (Dr. Pettibon is it's creator)

All my physical therapists and surgeon have said, "absolutely NO traction if you have had a fusion with hardware." So I wanted to tell you this so you can ask your docs about this.

Also, I googled this system and reviewed the research articles and not one was a double-blinded study, used small samples and did not directly use this system in the research provided. Maybe there is some other research i missed. Ask the chiropractor about the documented research results.

My opinion: Please look at this very carefully. If it were me, I would never consider it.

PS - Don't think it is legal to post a Dr.'s system for healing. (Dr. Pettibon)

Feel good Cindy

Thanks

Good points you make starshine. It is good to hear from you. I am concerned about the traction part, and will definitely discuss this with my surgeon before proceeding. I also don't know how this type of treatment will affect my WC stuff, so for now I am just researching.

Thanks for the concern. Dr. Pettibon has some really interesting testimonials, but I have to wonder how long term these people really feel better. Are they permanently fixed?

Hi Neck of Steel -

I suffered with debilitating thoracic and neck pain. My pain was from whiplashes and sitting at the computer all day. I saw ortho's chiro's, massage and physical therapists. The relief from pain was mild and I exercised to strengthen my back, but still pain! PT taped my shoulders to try to improve my posture, but (working at the computer) I would end up slouching! I was desperate to alleviate the pain so I invented a garment that comfortably holds my shoulders and spine correctly. If this sounds like you, please check out EDITED. I am reaching out to help free people of pain and enhance their life! EDITED first product a bra and a brace combined.

I don't know what to do!

Hi Cindy,
I understand the need to keep the site as support for the community suffering with pain and not make the site barraged with spam. I also understand that many companies with big AD $$s could hit the site. But what about entrprenauers like me that RISK everything to create something to help themselves and others. I am a startup not a big company! I know I figured out how to improve posture and for the first time in 30 years I am pain free and can move my neck more now than since I was 16 years old! I want to share it.
I guess this site is to complain about your pain and not offer a solution! I emailed Ron for suggestions...
Cindy try to Google the word EDITED together.
They may not edit that. Mary
