Just got off the phone with my surgeon's nurse. Set the date for my disc-herniation-removal surgery. (Can't remember the "official" name!)
So I'm going Dec 10th. I have to be there at 6:15 am - I think I'm the first scheduled surgery for the day. I'm allergic to Laytex, so I guess they have to do special set up for that.
Also, the nurse said that they can't garauntee the surgery won't be cancelled! With all the H1N1 stuff, if there's a bed shortage or something, they may cancel all surgeries.
I'm a lot more nervous about this than I thought I would be. I've tried everything to deal with my pain, and the numbness and weakness and pain in my leg has come back and is really bad right now. So I want to do this, I'm just nervous.
I've got a little over a month to wait so I have to try not to get obsessed with this, and stay positive. I'm going to get some of the things mentioned on the pre-op must have list - like satin sheets or PJs!
How have others dealt with this kind of stress?
Important things first. What kind of dog is Sapa?
Yes, it is a big step when you get the date set. Somehow, the reality of the situation slaps one in the face, right?
It sounds like you know how to get your house in order, etc. Now you need to work on getting your head in order, too.
Before my first surgery I was not aware that there are many good CDs on the market that are for relaxation and even how to prepare for surgery. There have been research studies showing that patients who are relaxed and "un-stressed" actually do better during surgery and recover faster.
It is important to have some method that you can use to relax. Various forms of deep breathing can be very relaxing. Find a system that works for you, even if it is just breathing slowly and deeply, focusing all your concentration on that breath, following it in and out, feeling how it feels -- is it warm or cool, etc. If you do this for about five minutes, it should slow down your pulse and distract you from your apprehensions.
I found it very helpful when I was awaiting surgery. I was told to come at 1 for a 3:00 surgery. They took me back promptly at 3:00, on an uncomfortable gurney thing, without my glasses or anything to read or watch. Normally you are taken in right away, but both my surgeon and the anesthesiologist for my surgery were tied up in other surgeons which were both running late. Well, late it was. I watched patients get taken in, one by one. Then as time dragged on, all the staff began to leave...until I felt like I and one nurse were the only ones left...and it was her first day!! It was 6:30 before they came to retrieve me...about the time when my family assumed I'd be coming out! If I had been nervous, this waiting would have been sheer hell. But I was able to stay relaxed and focused by using my breathing techniques.
I'll send you a PM with a couple suggestions of the type of CDs I'm thinking of that might work for you.
I always feel better when I feel prepared. You might want to fully research the procedure you will be having and talk to the doctor or his staff so you know what will be done, how long it will take, how long the recovery will be, etc.
I'm sure others will have more suggestions for you, too.

Thanks Gwennie! I will definitely look into your suggestions. I'm sure that would help everyday, not just for surgery prep!
My pup is a Shi Tzu/Bichon cross. His name is Cooper and he's the most wonderful little pup. He's about 7 months old now. In this picture, I think he's about 3 months. Even on my worst days, he brings a smile to my face!! It'll be hard after surgery to not be able to bend to pet him, tho that's limited now too. He'll just have to come to me I guess.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
Howdy Sapa!
I too am allergic to Latex - just touch me and 10 minutes later I blister and burn! Nasty stuff!!! On my first fusion surgery even with the big "No Latex" sign they put above my head, 2 nurses still grabbed my arm for IV, blood draw with the dang gloves on! The IV location oozed and bled badly, and the wrist area the other nurse grabbed blistered in minutes. My husband was HOT over that! The last surgery I REFUSED to take off my medic alert bracelet, and my hubby stood vigil until they took me away! No Latex encounters on this visit!
I was the first surgery of the day on both - and was specifically told it was to ensure me the safest environment from Latex exposure. Most of our ambulance services and several hospitals have now gone Latex free. My surgical hospital of choice unfortunately still hasn't. I have since the allergy developed (3 years now) am starting to get the associated "food" allergies. If you haven't noticed any of those yet, take a peek on the Medic Alert site for the list. Bananas (love em!!) and Kiwi send my whole body starting at my scalp into burning, then itching, hives etc mess. Just something to keep in the back of your mind. Good luck with the surgery - keep a close eye on Latex "stuff."

Oh wow, Brenda! That's really bad! Fortunately, my allergy isn't as bad at this point. I immediately break out in a rash, which mophs into hives, and my throat gets itchy and swollen. Depending on how much and how long I've been exposed to the Latex, I react less or more. If I go and wash immediately, it helps! I'm also allergic to penicillan. I don't have any food allergies that I know of fortunately!
I will definitely watch for those nasty IV nurses!!!
Thanks for the tip!
Ummm....Are we related or something? I have never had Penicillian that I can remember, but since I was 5 or so, NO penicillian allowed for me! Most NSAID's and I don't get along anymore either!
Oh, keep bees away please?
Back to Latex... Be real careful with this allergy. One of the scary things to it is EACH exposure makes the reaction(s) progressively worse! I was on assignment away from the office for a few days. At the hotel I went down to have some eats and a beer. While there every time this lady walked behind me I got a scratchy feeling in my throat and would sneeze. About the 3rd time this happened I looked behind me. She was going back and forth with latex balloons to put up for a birthday party! I never had reactions like that before - scared me a bit. I mentioned this to my doctor and was re-told "This allergy is particularly nasty as its affects on most increase with every exposure!" Okay, now I am convinced. I now carry extra Epi Pens, and have it on my MedicAlert bracelet. Up until a year ago, I didn't give it much importance! Do some research - scary, but the information may make your life easier. Gotten break outs yet brushing your teeth with a "rubber" tongue scratcher on the back of the brush head? Not fun - food for though! *HUG*

Baloons are bad!!! Any time I'm near one, I have a reaction. We had some for our granddaughters, and I had issues! I don't know how I react to bees - never been stung. Hopefully I won't have to find out!
I didn't realize it gets worse each time you're exposed. Like you said, I don't really put that much importance on it right now. I'll have to be more careful. And I never would have thought about the tongue/gum cleaner on the back of the toothbrush, but I often have swelling inside my mouth!!!! Oh my goodness! I guess I have to reassess a lot of my "stuff".
Thanks!
I am kind of glad this topic came up. Granted *most* folks that get sensitized to Latex fall into the medical, law enforcement (me), public service, those that have had multiple surgeries are susceptible too! I went about 6 months in agony at work before my skin doc figured out what was causing my problems. GLOVES! We put them on to search people, handle evidence etc. My palms would really react the worst! It would get so bad that I couldn't close my hands. We also had a janitor who put this chemical stuff on everything to clean - it had "natural rubber" as one of the ingredients, so just touching the water bubbler for a drink my finger tips blistered!
This is an area covered under The Americans With Disabilities (ADA) Act. They stopped using solvents and equipment containing natural rubber at my Branch. My guess?? Latex is getting a lot more serious than they let out - I was in Walmart a few weeks ago, and in the school supplies isle..."Pencil Eraser / Latex Free!!!" Nuff said eh?
Be careful with Latex all!!
