I decided to go ahead with the M.I. TLIF/laminectomy surgery after my nervousness and cold feet. I'm scheduled for tomorrow at 9:30am.
Does anyone have any last minute advice they'd like to share? Anything that you wish you took care of the day or night before surgery?
I went to Target yesterday and picked up everything I needed off the great post operative 'must haves' list on this forum. It's starting to finally feel real now! I'm sipping on my Metamucil as I type this....
Good Luck,
Do you have a good TV and lots of videos? I watched tons while recovering.... There wasn't much else I could worry about. Have a grabber, elevated toilet seat and loose your shame
I needed "all" kinds of help for the first 2 weeks at home.
Learn to be calm & satisfied with yoru help and always say THANK YOU. Let the housework & laundry pile up IT IS OK and it is not going any where.
Have a SUPER SURGERY!

I am sure you have all the necessities so I won't bother with mentioning those. I loved having a Netflix account while I was recovering. I wish you a safe and successful procedure. Hang in there, you're in the homestretch
Hope the surgery goes well, I wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to hearing from you as soon as you feel up to it, so we know how you are.

Hi! Sorry you haven't heard from me lately. I've been thinking about you often. I've said my prayers for you and your medical team and I will continue to do so.
The only thing I wish I had purchased prior to surgery was either satin sheets or satin pajama bottoms. Getting out of bed the first week felt like velcro was stuck to my backside - really hard to move in and out of bed. Drink as much water as you can once you are allowed. You will find the water helps to get your bowels moving again and it will give you practice getting in and out of bed
When in the hospital, use the pain meds and the patient controlled analgesic pump when you need it. Walk as much as you can while in the hospital. If you have steps in your house, make sure that physical/occupational therapy goes over this with you so you will feel comfortable once you go home. Also, if you have other obstacles at home such as a high bed or a high tub to step in, they'll help you figure out the best way to address these obstacles as well.
I'm thinking of you and I hope that you are at peace today and tomorrow morning. Relax today and try imagine a life with less pain
It will soon be yours.

I'm glad you reached a decision and I hope you are at peace with it. For a few days after surgery, you will probably feel like you made a big mistake...but this too will pass. I think most of us felt that way at one point in recovery, or another. It does get better.

2 ESIs unsuccessful in managing pain

Was told nothing could be done for me because I had three levels and DDD
Given option of three-level fusion after being told nothing could be done
Surgery was November 19, 2008 fusing L3/4 to S1
Attempted PLIF (from both sides) on November 19th.
Rods and pins were placed, but scar tissues prohibited removal of the old discs.
On November 24th, I had ALIF (opened from top of pubic bone to the bottom of my left ribcage) and removed the torn discs, placed dowels with cadaver bone, and some of my own bone marrow mixed with BMP. I left the hospital on the 26th of November.
Currently suffering temporary (hopefully) nerve damage of both legs and total numbness of right foot. Strange tingling in both feet at 4.5 months out of surgery. Numbness still exists in right foot at almost 9 months out.
Weaned off Fentanyl patches and only take occasional percocet for pain.
i am laying in the hospital bed right now. the surgery went well they said. im on a morphine pump and taking flexeril. i woke up with A LOT ALOT A LOT of pain, and I still have immense pain whenever I try to move or roll over in bed. the morphine makes me really nauseas so I'm not sure if I want them to give me something stronger.
I sure do hope this intesnse pain goes away soon. I'm pretty sure it's mostly where my incison is, but it's hard to tell. The hospital food has been disgusting, so I'm kinda hungry.

I hope they get your pain to a manageable level very quickly for you.

It sounds like your surgery went well. The first couple days are the most uncomfortable.
For me, I just focused on how I felt compared to the day, even hour, before. Any small improvement can lift the spirit. It helps to know that even though the pain is intense, it is getting better and will continue to do so.
I wasn't able to eat for a couple days, and then I got to have the wonderful hospital food! yuck! I am still not eating that much at day 8 post-surgery.
Hang in there, every day is different. Just know you are on your way to a better life! It gets easier.

Glad to hear surgery went well & hope you'll be home soon. First 3 days were bad for me, be sure once you're released from the hospital to take your pain meds on time. As long as you stay on top of the pain, it should be controlled well. Also, try icing your back (15-20 mins max), it can be helpful. You sound very positive, try to keep an upbeat attitude, it's critical to your recovery/healing.
Take care & keep us posted.

Thanks everyone! They put something in my IV to help with nausea, not sure if it's the same as Fengrain but I'll ask. They switched me off the morphine pump and gave me 2 Norcos and 2 Flexerils. I have already stood up with the occu therapist and tonight I will go to physical therapy. No more catheter, either.
It's kinda funny, the day sbefore my surgery I was in a lot less pain than I'v been in lately. Go figure, right?

Yes, those first few days are awful - especially if the pain meds make you nauseated. The medication they probably gave you is Phenergan -- it's used for motion sickness and nausea. I think once you've been up and down a couple of times, you'll probably start to feel a bit better. You may, however, have some nerve pain -- your nerves get painful when they realize the pressure is off and they start to re-generate themselves. My surgeon gave me Lyrica for that and it helped a lot.
All the best to you!

It appears I've broken out in allergic rashes. Not sure what I'm allergic to. I know that sometimes they tape they use causes me to be itchy, but my whole face got red and blotchy. After hours, I finally got them to put Benadryl through my IV.
They also brought me the wrong meal 3 times. I can't eat dairy and I got dairy, they didn't realize that I'm allowed to be off the liquid diet and brought me liquid diets, etc. etc. So annoying. At least the PT lady told me I did great!

It sounds as if you are doing well after surgery. Those who haven't been there will probably think, she hurts, she has a rash, she was nauseous - what's so good about that? Many good things: you feel like telling everyone about your surgery means that you aren't knocked out and you are capable of thinking (yay!), you get to eat solid food while many were restricted to liquid diets for days (yay!) and your surgery is over (the biggest YAY of them all).
I'm so glad you did well with PT. It can be scary. It sounds like you are doing amazing! Continue to rest. I hope the benadryl works and I hope they find the right pain med for you.

Hi Kristin I know I'm doing better but it still hurts so much. I still feel like I have the same back pain that I did prior to surgery, but it's so hard to tell. I also have some pain (feels like a pulled muscle) on my right thigh/groin area.
I got a new nurse (thank goodness... you dont even want to know about the other one) and she has me on morphine through my IV every 2 hours, 2 norcos and a skelaxin. If this doesn't help, I'm going to cry. Also, ever since my catheter has come out I've had a really, really hard time urinating.

I don't know if this helps or not, but my surgeon told me the patient can end up in some "weird" positions on the operating table...that they pad and try to be very careful of the person's body, but sometimes the patient ends up being sore across the thigh, or across the lower tummy area....Perhaps that accounts for your thigh pain.
Just remember that nerves were moved and they don't like to be touched, so you will probably feel new and different sensations for awhile. This is perfectly normal.
Just try to relax, think positive thoughts and realize that the first couple days are tough, but then it will get better. I'll save my "you've had a BIG surgery..." speech until after you get home.

something fierce from morphine. I think they put Dilaudid in my IV after surgery, because I just can't take the morphine. You sound like the two times I've been in a certain hospital. I'm highly allergic to soy protein, and since I'd lost a lot of blood and needed to rebuild my strength, they'd bring me broth and protein drinks -- yep! Both of them full of soy protein! I ended up with hives all over (from the broth - I could read the label on the protein drink). Apparently, the staff couldn't read the green neon band on my arm that said no soy protein! I too had to have the Benadryl in the IV. GEEZ! I though they were supposed to try and heal us!
BuckeyeBack - yes, I do still occasionally take Lyrica. It worked better than what they gave me before, which was gabapentin. If I get a flare-up and need steriods, I generally need the Lyrica too.

hi there, thanks for hanging in there with me. you guys made me feel a lot better, but im still in a lot of pain. It hurts so so so bad on my right side... from my lower back to the front of my thigh to the front of my right hip. It's so hard to log roll out of bed and then getting up is really difficult.
actually i just woke up now with some of the most intense pain ive ever felt in my life. they dont have a toilet extender for me, is that normal? i didnt purchase one yet thinking id get one for just the house but i dont have one here.
Isteller, that is horrible about your allergy, I'm sorry you had that happen. Sounds a lot like me, you're right. I've had so many problems here with staff not noticing me. They 'forgot' to bring me my dinner last night until I just told them to forget about it and my dad went and got me a sandwich somewhere.
Today I'm supposed to meet with my surgeon and his assistant. I'm looking forward to that, I hope they can explain things to me a bit better than the nurses can. I had one nurse that was absolutely clueless.
gwennie, they told me the same thing about strange positions on the operating table. she also just told me that i might feel muscles i never knew i had before, and that since i am walking okay that its most likely muscle pain. I sure hope it is, but who knows.
It's just so frustrating when I felt so good yesterday and today I'm a total mess. Pain is probably an 8 or 9. The nurse comes in 5 minutes with my norco & flexeril, I hope that helps me sleep a bit. When I told them the pain meds didn't help much they were goin to put me on Ultram instead of the morphine. I take Ultram (tramadol) at home and it never helped with the pain so I was really confused as to why they'd give me that here!
Thanks again for all the support. I hope it doesn't just seem like I'm complaining, I guess I just want to vent and document what happened so that I can remember vividly, too.
Oh and thanks for the puppy compliment! That is my little baby, Hana, I miss her so much.

Well, my dear, you probably won't appreciate my comment since you are in so much pain, but I think you're doing really well. I never could have been typing away after my fusion. Other than eating meals and going to PT, my recollection is that I was pretty out of it. My pain meds must have worked really well, because I don't really remember too much. I couldn't watch TV because I didn't have the attention span and I don't think my eyes were focusing well enough to see it.
So, compared to how I was, you are doing great! But then I just broke Rule #5: never compare you progress to that of another person!!!

I sure hope they find something soon to help with your pain levels
Ms. Humpty Dumpty Took a great fall and all the Drs and surgeons could not put her back together again.
After my fall I started to fall apart. L1-L2-L3-L4 - S1 & S2 gone. ( full herniation )Spinal stenosis, spinal arthritis, degenerative disk, scoliosis.
The spacers in your back are gone/going, spinal nerve damage.
Spinal spurs. Both knee caps & both hips have degenerative bone disease, arthritis and bone spurs.
No surgeries as Drs. don't think it will help and may make things worse.
Age 47 - Here to find & offer support.
I think the reason I can write and type so well is because none of the meds are really affecting me for some reason. The nurse last night could not believe that 2 Norco's 2 flexerils and morphine in my IV didn't knock out my pain. Ugh. They had to page 3 different doctors because none would call back. Finally one approved more morphine. I saw my surgeon's assistant this morning and that's it. I still haven't talked much to my surgeon at all. I think I might be getting a 'pain consult' today but who knows.
I think they want to send me home today but I'm not sure. I just had PT and I'm in a lot of pain again. I don't know if its muscular or nerve pain. *sigh* I have pain on my right side near my incision in my back and it wraps around my front right hip and goes down my thigh. I'm so miserable.
Thanks for all the encouragement. I am trying to still be positive but I really don't understand why these pain meds are not affecting me. I'm typing all this after taking all my meds like 30 min ago.

I agree w/ the others, you're doing great! Sometimes, your body can react w/ rashes, hives, itching because of a trauma or stress - might be related to your surgery or the anesthesia used. Also, I was given a strong antibiotic IV for 1-2 days post, maybe this is causing the reaction? This can happen even if you're OK w/ oral or injectible antibiotics - the IV versions are like sledgehammers to your system. As far as the pain, I had it bad for the first 3 days - besides morphine, dilaudid, valium, muscle relaxers I also was given fentanyl through my IV - the combo did the trick. The pain meds can also slow down your bladder, like Ms. HD, I drank tons of water and it finally 'woke up' my bladder. Hope the meeting goes well w/ your surgeon and that you're given the OK to go home soon. Take good care and keep us posted.
P.S. - was writing this when you last posted, sorry that you're still in a lot of pain, hope they can come up w/ a solution for you very soon. Gentle hugs

Sorry to hear about your pain levels. Hopefully they will find a combo that works. It will get better. Yes they really work you over during surgery. A lot of trauma to your back but just keep thinking that in the great scheme of things this pain will be short lived and you'll slowly get stronger and better. I was so happy that I woke up after surgery. I considered that step one. I am having a reaction to the bandage over my staples. First ones from the hospital were really bad, new ones are latex free but are still bugging me. Oh well I get my staples out tomorrow and that should end. Hang in there!!
MRI-Severe spinal stenosis at L4-5 secondary to a combination of ligamentum flavum hypertrophy, concentric disc bulge, severe facet arthrosis and Grade 1 anterolisthesis of L4 on L5.Crowding of nerve roots and effacement of CSF from ambient spaces around the nerve roots at L4-5. Good luck to you and take it one moment at a time, when you need to. I had surgery exactly seven days ago and here is my post op lifesaver......peppermint tictacs. The night after my surgery my throat hurt so badly when I swallowed. It was scratched and swollen and just not happy. Coughing or clearing it was not possible at that time. At the end of the first 24 hours I asked for something and they had nothing to offer. I remembered my peppermint tictacs in my purse and asked for them. It made the biggest difference in my minute to minute living. It cleared my nasels, soothed my throat, made me start salivating, and generally just picked my mood up. A simple tic tac did all of that. I used them for another 24 hours then didn't need them. I would lay there half conscious, incision hurting, pressing my button every ten minutes and praising the maker of tictacs. I promise you will be happy you have them. It's the small things that matter and some of them are so simple. Hope this helps in your recovery. Take care.
Sincerely,
Shannon
edit to add...I just realized you've had your surgery.dduhhh! heehee As you can see, I am still on pain meds. Anyway, You just hang in there. If your throat hurts, use your mints!
After being ignored by my surgeon for about 8 hours, I finally got his assistant to call in a pain consult for me. I'm now on Oxy IR every 4 hours and Flexeril every 6. Not sure if this combo works yet, I just woke up in time for my dose of Oxy and I'm in horrible pain again.
*sigh* hanging in there....
I still haven't had a meeting with my surgeon and the only way we got him to even listen to me was to call his office and basically harass his assistant. Even the nurse yelled at them. Unreal. I've basically been in limbo all day. Ahhhh
thenade, good luck with the staples tomorrow, i hope it goes smoothly! thanks for the tip slk, I've been sipping on smoothes that friends and family bring me and it seems to help a bit.
pfd, maybe my rash was from the antibiotics, i didnt even think of that. its going away now, thank goodness.

Do you still have that pain in your thigh? Is it on the front of your thigh? I developed something similar the day after my fusion and it was the worst pain I had ever experienced -- ever.
I'm sorry your surgeon is making himself scarce. How annoying.

Yes gwennie! It's a horrible pain that begins at my back and seems to affect my hip, groin area (on the right side) and my right thigh. I can also feel it going down my right leg when I sit to pee. My left side is perfectly fine.
I just got my meds switched again. This time I'm on: Ultram and Oxy alternating every 2 hours. Lyrica every 12 hours. Flexeril every 8 hours. I'm so confused by all this, seriously. I also just put a suppository in, hoping that some of my discomfort will go away once the pressure in my belly is relieved.
I'm glad i'm updating this as much as I can, it helps me remember what I've taken and when I've done PT and stuff.
I have a feeling they'll send me home tomorrow and I'm actually terrified for that.

Just a wild guess here, but I have a feeling the pain you describe on the right side is a result of the way you were positioned on the operating table. They try to pad and keep the patient on the padding, but my doctor told me that sometimes the patient is placed in very "awkward" positions as they attempt to put in a cage or whatever...access is not always so straight-forward, and it can leave the patient with weird sensations and pain. My femoral artery ended up getting squished and it took quite awhile for it to return to normal.
I'm sorry you're having so much trouble getting meds that help you. Hopefully they'll kick in and you will be a little better. They shouldn't discharge you until your pain is controlled with oral medications.
Try to get some sleep.

I wonder if your new thigh pain is specifically from the surgery. I had a horrible pain in the groin and hypersensitivity in my thigh post op that wasn't there before hand. I think some of it was from placement and man-handling during surgery and some from the nerves being irritated during surgery. 90% of it is gone.
I only saw my surgeon once, the morning after surgery and for about 1 minute, but I also did not go through what you are dealing with either. Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease so keep after the doctor until you get help. I hope the nurses continue to advocate for you too.

it might be nerve pain. It does tend to travel down the hips and into the legs. I had horrible nerve pain in my thighs (and sometimes down to my feet) but mine waited until I got home from the hospital. The Lyrica really helped that, but it took a couple of doses until it finally died down. I really hope it helps you. Sorry it took so long to get hold of your surgeon. Mine came to see me frequently in the hospital, especially the morning after my second surgery, as he wanted to know if I really meant it when I threatened to remove some of his body parts and stuff them down his throat.
Yes, I really was THAT upset.

I hope you are feeling some relief. Do you have help once you get home? My doctor told me the Flexiril does not last for long term. He now put me on Backlofen and it's awesome. I also found the Cymbalta to help. I wish you healing. We all know your pain. It will get better soon, I hope. Rest up. Don't feel bad asking for pain manangement help. Do the Lidoderm patches help at all?

I get very upset when my patients aren't very, very comfortable after surgery, so it seems so difficult for me to believe, that pain management after these surgeries can't be accomplished by these surgeons. Linda, I found great humor in what you told your surgeon. I'm awaiting surgery on Nov. 23rd, and have already had a disagreement with my surgeon about pain management. I want a pain pump and he refuses to allow me to have one. The bottom line is, it doesn't matter to me, as long as he is able, or cares to manage pain appropriately. I had no idea that spine patients were suffering so badly after surgery...it makes me very sad for everyone who has had to endure such pain. I am also terrified contemplating the horrible pain that lies ahead.

I still haven't seen my surgeon. I've heard from the doctor on duty here that my pain could be a result of the position I was in on the table, but that it also sounds like nerve pain.
I can't believe the care I received. It's unbelievable. I just addressed it with the doctor who came to check up on me (not my surgeon or his assistant) and he even said that some of the nurses are idiots. That's real nice & professional, huh?
I hope this thread doesn't scare anyone, I'm sure my pain is what almost everyone goes through. I'm just having a hard time with the care I'm getting. I feel really frustrated and stressed and I know that can't be good for recovery.
kendrak, the lidoderm patches never helped me pre surgery, but maybe they will post op? they have me on so much medication and i'm stll in a lot of pain, i have like the highest tolerance ever! im only 5'2" and 120 lbs, Thanks for the info about the Backlofen. I've had Flexeril prescribed to me years ago and it never helped much.
Hopefully I will be released today. They said physical therapy said I was okay to go home, but occupational therapy wants me here longer.

with the hip/leg pain. But mine didn't get bad until I was home from the hospital. I've always had a kind of ridiculous pain threshold, to the point my surgeon said that when he got into my back and could see the level of damage and stenosis he couldn't believe I was even walking, much less working! By my 3rd day in the hospital (after open 2 TLIF L4-S1 btw) I went more than 8 hrs without any pain meds at all, and actually only had to take some percocet to counteract the morphine withdrawals from having the pump for the first 2 days. Once I was home I never took pain meds for pain, and never even filled my Rx for Flexeril.
Anywhoo...when I came home, my left leg started to kind of ache, and next thing I knew it felt like I had been clipped on the left side by a truck! My entire left side from hip to knee was killing me. It kept me up all night and I struggled all day. But after reading everything on here, I assumed it was either the whole positioning thing during surgery, and the nerves and even muscles on that side freaking out. No pain meds, or nerve meds seemed to help, and in fact the only thing that made it feel any better was a heating pad, or sitting in the shower with the hot water pouring over my hip/thigh.
But suddenly at about day 14 or so after surgery I noticed it started to ease up, and then after another 2 days it was totally gone.
Just wanted to share with the hope that you're just going through something similar and that it will resolve itself soon so you can continue moving forward and recovering!
Best of luck!

Returned to work on Nov 2nd, 2009 – still with no pain
Better and stronger every day, but best of all still pain (AND MED) free!
- I am so, so, so sorry that you are having a rough time at the hospital. It sounds like if something can go wrong, it has. I am hoping that by the time you read this, your med situation is better. They need to find the right medication for you so you can rest - that will really help with the healing. You need some relief so you can relax.
I agree with Gwennie (I think Gwennie wrote it) - while I hate to compare my surgery with yours, I would like to mention that my leg pain and much of the post-surgical discomfort/pain was probably caused by the positioning during surgery. In my appointment with my PA this week, I asked him what kind of positions your body is placed in during surgery. It is unbelievable to think that our bodies can even go into some of those positions
Anyway, the leg pain, weakness and numbness is starting to go away. Mine was never as bad as what you are experiencing. I am so sorry
I hope you get to go home today. Your husband can pamper you for the rest of the weekend. I hope he remembers to have someone come and give him a break as he is going to have his hands full with your recovery for a long time and if he doesn't take care of himself, it will be difficult for him to take care of you.
I hope you get some good rest this weekend and your pain gets under control. I'm taking my 16 year old to Kansas City this weekend for her birthday but I'm bringing my computer so I'll check up on you.
Very gently hugs sent to you...
Kristin

Today is the day I go home, I think. My nurse just told me that I should be released between 3 and 5 (it's 2:20 right now). I walked with the occupational therapist and even though I am in pain she said I did great.
I got the Oxycodone this morning and it knocked me out. I slept for hours. I guess I needed the sleep badly. I woke up sore and achey and just got my Ultra (at least that's what I think I just took). It made me nauseous at first so they gave me something in my IV for that.
I'm nervous to go home. We have lots of stairs and 4 dogs. We are staying with my parents until I'm better 100% so my husband will get a break when my parents help me out. I'm really appreciative of everything my husband has done to help me, I don't think I'd be doing as good if he wasn't here with me. My parents seem to think this surgery is not major, so I know they are going to make me feel bad for not helping out around the house, but oh well. I am going to rest. I do not want to go through this experience again.
The pain management people want me to follow up with them after I get discharged, so hopefully they will be willing to work out which meds are good for me. I agree with you Kristin, I don't think this throbbing pain is helping in my recovery, since I can't relax and relaxing is so important in recovery.
I really appreciate everyone posting to me. I sort of feel bad that I'm such a complainer but I hope that maybe someone else going through what I'm going through can read this and know they're not alone. It comforted me when the doctors and nurses told me that lots of people have the pain that I am having. Doesn't make me feel better physically, but mentally at least I'm not alone.

How can we try and make you feel better if we don't know you're hurting? And, it's important to be honest with the doctors so they can try to help you out. Hopefully, once you get out of the hospital, you'll feel better. NO HELPING around the house!! If you need a note, tell your parents to come here and talk to me. Goodness -- you'll need to take it slow and easy.
Sleeprgirl - I have a feeling they snuck a little Versed in on me during my last surgery. I'm allergic to it and, if you are allergic, it can make you extremely combative. I woke up yelling things I'd never dream of saying in polite society, and I did threaten to do awful things to my surgeon! The poor man. He really is very nice. He had also left strict orders that I be made as comfortable as possible, but I guess the nurse I had that night couldn't read. She shut off my light and shut my door and left me screaming alone in the dark. Great training she must have had!!

I am home now!!!!! Yay!!
They finally released me after the occupational therapy lady said it was okay. I had another mishap with my pain meds, ugh. They were ready to send me home with prescriptions for Norco, Tramadol & Flexeril... and that's it. When in reality, we found out that Norco does nothing for me and Tramadol is what I already was taking pre surgery. They "forgot" to add the Oxycodone IR and Lyrica. The nurse at first pretty much told me I was out of luck, the pain clinic was closed and I'd have to wait until tomorrow to call them and get the prescriptions I needed. I about lost it. Thank goodness my surgeon's assistant came in to say goodye and check on me. I started bawling and told her how horrible the experience was, and I told her they were giving me the drugs that don't work. She got pissed, left the room and then I heard some yelling. The nurse then walked back in the room with my new prescriptions, for Oxycodone IR, Flexeril & Lyrica. I already have Tramadol at home. I'm just so pissed they were ready to send me on me way without confirming that the meds were right for me.
Oh well, now i'm home with my family and puppies. I'm scared to heal at home, it's so different from the hospital. I feel like I'm going to hurt myself.
