Tape Allergy

Does anyone have information about the various types of surgical tape that are used and what is the most common type?

The last time I had surgery (in 1986) the tape they used across my forehead burned and blistered my skin. It left permanent indentations in my forehead where the tape contacted my skin.

I will be having surgery this Friday and I would like to be able to tell them what type of tape to not use.

Thanks!

I also have a reaction to surgical tape. And after I had a surgery and found this out. I just told the pre op nurse that I was allergic to surgical tape and they used something different on the last 3 surgeries. And that was all I had to tell them.
Good luck, Jim

tape

There are several different kinds of tape that is used in anesthesia. Where I work, it is a matter of preference, but sometimes it is a matter of what a particular facility buys in bulk. When someone tells me they are allergic to tape, I use paper tape on them, otherwise I use a tape called transpore tape, which is most commonly used, but can cause problems with some people Smile

It used to be common practice

to tape the breathing tube or other probes to the face, alot of anaesthetist tie the tube now rather than tape it down.
Just tell them your allergic to tape, what year the allergy was and let them take care of it, they'll keep a watchful eye out for any signs of a reaction.
Good luck

Thanks for the responses

I will be sure to let them know during prep about my reaction to the tape.

I remember the pain from the tape touching my skin more than the actual pain from the surgery. I kept trying to pull the tape off of my head while under the affects of pain medication and anesthesia.

The nurses noticed the reaction the first time they changed the bandages. By that time, the damage was already done and could not be reversed.

It ended up taking longer for the tape injury to heal than the surgical cut.
