I know this is not a back question, but it does fall under chronic pain and I haven't really been able to find a forum for this particular disease. My mom has suffered from painful non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy for the past 8 years. She is on the same pain meds as I am along with other meds like Neurontin for nerve pain and a whole lot of other ones that I can't remember. I have seen posts on here in the past about PN and was wondering if anyone has ever had peripheral nerve decompression or knows someone that has? If so, can you please let me know if it was successful? Thank you. Lauren.
Someone once said "Pain is a good thing, it reminds you that you're still alive." I'd like to tell that person that I would have settled for a post-it.
Herniated disc (L5-S1) with sciatic pain, Laminectomy in 2006. Post-op chronic lower back pain which I did not have before the surgery and no one can figure out why. Started having chronic widespread pain shortly after first surgery as well as the back pain. Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2007. Discovered DDD in 2008. Fusion at L5 in December 2008 with hardware. Current meds: 80 mg Oxycontin 3 x a day with an additional 20mg as well as the 80's 3 x a day since they don't make it in 100mg. 10mg percocet. Baclofen. Klonopin. Nortriptyline. Requip. Celexa.
Past meds: Neurontin and Lyrica, both made me sick. Savella which is the first drug made specifically for Fibro and not just as a secondary...went in to anaphylactic shock. Oral morphine, Avinza and Kadian, both made me sick even though the IV Morphine never did. Fentanyl patch made me hallucinate, I swear I could see through my eyelids, LOL! Oral Dilaudid made me a little queasy and tired, no pain relief. Lidoderm patches & trigger point injections, didn't help. Failed ESI's. Open to any suggestions. Lauren.
i have peripheral neuropathy but have not had decompression. I was on nerve pain meds for over 2 years with little relief. In June i had a spinal cord stimulator trial which was successful. In july i was implanted with a perm stimulator. I have about 70% relief as of now. Alot better than the meds.
Hello,
I had a laminectomy/decompression and a fusion this past July. I had a lot of scar tissue causing spinal stenosis. My surgery was 6.5 hours long. Now, there were no guarantees that I would have pain relief after surgery....my nerves had been compressed for about 4 years. Well, I had 2 months with no pain and now the pain has come back. I'm taking 2700 mg of Neurontin to keep the pain at bay. At my last doctor appointment, we discussed a spinal nerve stimulator and are getting things set up for the trial. I'm optomistic about it working because the majority of the scar tissue was cleaned out during the surgery. It's important for you to know, that there are no guarantees of pain relief when the nerves have been compressed for a time.
Take care,
Rhonda
