Chronic Pain
Terrible hip pain... now pain in my knee????

So, I have been having pain in my lumbar spine for about a year now. While in California (May/June) I noticed pain in my right hip, and down my leg which I assumed was sciatic.

I had an ESI last month, and immediately following, the pain in my right hip was the worst ever, and even flared up in my left hip. A few days later, the pain was gone from my spine (yay) but still in my right hip.

Last weekend (around Oct 1st) The pain in my right hip became unbearable again, and caused my spine to "flare-up" (spine felt bruised)

I am not feeling pain in my spine anymore (yay) but am getting intense pain in my right hip, and now in my right knee.

When I woke up this morning, my hip was at about a 4. It has gradually increased throughout the day, to about a 6-7. I just loaded up the dishwasher (15 mins?) by the time I was done, I was limping.

My neurologist has always been concerned about how severe the pain was in my hip. He felt it was too intense to be referred from my spine. I was supposed to have a bone scan a few weeks ago, but found out I was pregnant, and had to cancel.

I have been to PCP, Neurologist, Neurosurgeon, Pain Management, and even another PCP. Should I seek out a Rheumatologist or Orthopedist?

Does anyone know what kind of tests can be done? I was told that I have arthritis in my spine, and probably in my hip. Is it possible to diagnose without a scan? Has anyone else had these symptoms?

Thanks for your input Big Grin ... I am off to try to go to sleep

hi hun

since you are pregnant, im wondering if you can even have cortizone injections???? call and ask. your still in your first trimester so im not sure.
they did help me a bunch with my hips. the knee well iv never attempted. but it did make my hip down feel better.
of course now i hope you can get something like that as the pregnancy goes on your going to have more added pressure to the hips.
i have arthritis all over. plus bursitis and osteoarthritis in both my hips. i know how painful it can be.
just ice for now or heat. and stay off of it, it should let up.
but call your obgyn and ask what you can have and what you cannot hunny. before getting into a rheumy etc. as xrays are not good either during pregnancy and that is the first thing a rheumy will want to figure it out.

hang in there

I have this in my left hip...my right hip can bother me,but there have been times when my left hip hurt so bad that getting out of the car was embarrassing.I had never heard of it before, but my PM knew exactly what it was when I told him where it was.I'll tell you this~the injection in my hip hurt much more than the ones in my neck,BUT it actually helped the pain. When I say helped...I mean it was like a small miracle, and I don't use the word lightly. It took every BIT of my pain away for 6 weeks...and I am not an ESI fan.I won't get any more in my neck only b/c they have not been helpful for me (there),but in my hip (you betcha),in a NY minute I would/will.

Well-this might not even mean anything to you as it may not be your problem, but the causes come from very active to inactivity,so...lol ,it's worth a look.

Hi Amanda

I too have terrible hip pain, or at least I thought it was hip pain. My NS told me I probably had bursitis, but upon re-examining me now says I have illiac crest pain. Probably caused by sacroiliac dysfunction or thoracolumbar problems.
I did some reading about both, and the symptons for both are exactly what I have. Women have the SJ dysfunction more because of chidbirth. It is sometimes misdiagnosed as herniated disk pain or sciatica. Bingo for me.... Anyway, you may want to look on wikepedia and webmd for some info. I was very enlightened. Hope you feel better girl....my Dr. put me on diclofenac in addition to my Norco, but with you expecting???? What meds can a pregnant lady take?
Have a super day.... if you can !

Sorry about your hip pain

I too am suffering from this, started about 6 weeks ago on the right side, and now has migrated to the left, giving me a clicking knee every time I stand up.

I hope yopur Doc can give you something and that your pregnancy goes well.

I can take percocet...

But now my doctors are fighting over who is going to prescribe it to me. I can take tylenol... other than that I can't take anything. I was told that during my second trimester, I can take NSAID's but only occasionally and ONLY during the second trimester.

I really wish I had been able to get the bone scan. Now I will have to wait until at least next June to have it done Crying

Thanks for all of your input... still hoping the doctors can refer me to someone who knows whats going on!
