ANYONE HAS STOMACH PROBLEMS SINCE A FUSION {ALIF}

I had my ALIF in dec 2011 and I noticed that my appetite was poor after the operation {I just thought that it was the after effects of the surgery} things that I like to eat I now hate .for the first 8 weeks all I could eat was soup because my vocal chords were scratched during intubation .but after they had healed I did not want my normal food and I was not enjoying eating at all roll on 15 months and I now have permanent stomach problems /constipation/diarrhea/ bloating pain so bad it could be confused with back pain .I read that this can happen when the consultant puts your guts back in your body .and if you are a little fat [like me} the consultant can find this part of the operation a bit tricky ..problems don't always rear there ugly head for months after the operation ..its like having a damaged artery in your heart you don't notice it until you have a heart attack .same thing with bowels you don't notice it until the bowel becomes blocked or infarcts and needs a resection .I have been having horrible stomach ache every day and I am under investigation for it .I just wondered if any of you people have had a similar thing ??

Stomach Problems

Tony:

I underwent a TLIF (L4-S1) in January 2011. Prior to the surgery I was a fairly active person (runner and gym exerciser) and I was concerned that I would gain weight after my surgery due to inactivity. Just the opposite. I have lost 15 pounds (you can convert that to stones in your spare time) and I believe I am still losing. I only weighed 155 lbs when I had my surgery, so I have lost approximately 10% of "me" in the past two years.

I no longer have any appetite for breakfast. The thought and smell of food at lunch and supper is appealing, but I just can't consume very much. Some people would kill to have my affliction. Guess I should consider it a blessing and place it in that category.

Next Monday I will be back on the table for a revision surgery. In all likelihood I will probably drop even more weight after that experience.

My bowels go through a 5 day cycle of normalcy to constipation regardless of what I eat or drink. I know it is a reaction to my narcotic meds. My theory is that after about four or five days the accumulation of narcotics overwhelms the intestines and they just become dormant. An overnight dose of laxative gets thing right. I also have some of the most horrific dreams on that night. Perhaps Charles Manson or Ted Bundy were led to their violent acts because of laxatives?

Hope all improves with you.

By the way..."which one is Pink?"

shine on you crazy diamond

I hope you have a uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery .I go for an MRI scan on my small bowel this Thursday .jim ever since this last operation I have been ill I think I made a mistake and in retrospect I don't think a was a suitable candidate for such invasive surgery .but you live and learn ..I am just terrified of what they may find ..I am very worried .I have lost weight but I do have a good appetite now {it dipped for a few weeks } .ALIF is a very invasive surgery and there is a lot of controversy about it .I had a top end consultant and I know he did his best as he was working with other consultant cock ups .but now I have been left with permanent nerve damage and intractable pain .its been so bad over the last 12 months ,there are many times I have gone to bed and hoped that I did not wake up ..the thought of getting through the day in pain all the time .being awake all night popping pills not being able to partake in life is too much .I am 47 and I have had 17 years of pain and suffering I just hope that life gets better soon ..
take care jim
