C6 C7 pressing on the esophogus

I was just told that C6 and C7 of my cervical spine are pressing on my esophogus. The MRI shows it clearly and now I know why I always feel like there is something stuck in my throat. Gee there is my spine LOL Gotta keep humor. Anyway so they say I should have surgery for this problem but I am Terrified to do this. Has anyone ever had this type of surgery or problem??? If so PLEASE drop me a line.

Welcome

First let me say welcome to spine-health. Have a look around and you will find many with cervical spine issues, including myself. As far as surgery, what type of surgery are they recommending? I could guess it might be ACDF(anterior cervical discectomy and fusion). But then again I am not sure if it is a vertebre or bone spur or disc that is your issues. Most cervical spine surgeries are going to be the ACDF. You can see a animated video here that shows the procedure. There are also plenty of members whom have had the surgery including myself.

Just thought I would stop by and welcome you to spine-health.

Hi Hapbear

I also had the esophagus being compressed but mine was caused by hardware backing out and I was in danger of puncturing my esophagus, it was straight to surgery for me. I did not have any symptoms other then extreme weight loss that they say was related. I had no pain or feeling of lump in my throat. Now that I look back to that time, I never ate because I just didnt like the way my food felt like it was getting stuck. I dropped about 35lbs in 2 months. My doctors were testing me for everything you could think of to find a cause for my sudden weight loss. It was during my yearly check-up with my nuero- surgeon that this was discovered. Imagine my surprise when he read my mri and said "you are in serious trouble." I thought my fusion had been successful. Keep us posted
Susan

Same here, but mine is due to a crack in my C6 vertebra and movement. It causes me to cough a lot, and feels too like the back of my throat below my tongue is dry and sticky! Nasty!!!

When mine started (voice issues (still) and the coughing), I went to my ENT to see what was going on if that helps?

MY DOCTOR STAFF ARE SO UNPROFESSIONAL

~X( So I called the Spine doc to see about the appt for the surgery and surprise my Dr. staff never called in the referral so now I have to wait until they all come back from their vacation. In the meantime I can only slurp down mush, have to sleep with a towel around my neck and even the ER cant help with the pain...O they are so going to hear about this when they get back Angry

Vacation?

This is an odd time of the year for vacations? I too think I would be giving an earful given the same position. Sorry...

What next

Ok I have read lots and lots of post and web sites but have never posted so here it goes.

22 months ago I had 3 level fusion done. After putting it off for 28 yrs. I was in an accident that damaged my neck...The doctors back then said I had fractured my neck but there was never any evidence of a fracture. After numerous doctors telling me there was nothing they could do to make my neck and shoulder stop hurting I finally gave up. I was fortunate to find a good chiropractor that helped me for the last 15 years. But when I started loosing dextarity in my hands I went to a neurologist and he said I had 3 levels of herniation that was misdiagnosed. We tried injections but they didn't work so we did scheduled a 2 level fusion but when he got it in there he had to do 3 levels.

Well other then using to my upper right arm and shoulder for the first time in 28 yrs and strenghtening my back muscles to hold my head up it went really well. I had gone back to life and was able to do things I hadn't done things in years. So I was excited.

About mid spiring I started having intermittent issues swallowing....I didn't think nothing of it. Just felt like a pill was suck in my throat. About three weeks ago I got a case of whiplash. the discomfort was very concerning I thought I had damaged something so I went back to my neuro and the image on my profile is the result. The c7 screws are retracting. the swallowing is getting worse sometimes it feels like I swallowed a hot piece of charcole that got stuck and it hurts. I have a appointment on the 29th to follow up. I called the Drs office to see if I should be concerned and he said to be sure and keep my appt if they get an earlier opening he would get me in.

Anybody had this happen? Will they have to do another surgery...if so what am I looking at in the way of recovery time??? any insite would be helpful.

Ok the verdict is in

I seen the doc today he is removing all the screws and hardware on dec 9th. He is pleased with the fusion and it is a mystery why the screws are backing out. Anyone know what the recovery is like for this. I hope to go back to wk the 12th. Just lookin for some insite on it.
