I injured my back snowboarding about 5 years ago (I was 14ish, 19 now). I of course didn't go to a doctor because I was invincible.
The injury left me with what I thought was a curved spine (1-3 degrees, I'm told)...I did go to see a doctor and a few chiropractors who all told me it was scoliosis. I believed them until I got a glimpse of an X-Ray.
It appears as though my spine is not curved, but twisted. The vertebrae are pretty much aligned, but slightly rotated as shown below:
(I didn't take the time to count them out, but this should give an idea anyway)
.I Neck
.I
.I Upper Back
..I << Gradual Twist Right
..I
..I << Gradual Back to Center
.I Mid-Back
I << Sudden 3/8" Twist Above This Vertebrae
I Lower

Is there a different name for this? Or is it a type of scoliosis?
welcome to Spine Health. You have found a good place for information and support with spinal problems.
I am not medically trained, and so can only share my experiences and my thoughts.
First, who told you that your spine is curved by 1-3 degrees?
As far as I know, this is very slight.
Do you have any other symptoms?
I had an x-ray because I was having thoracic tightening and my GP thought that I may have rotation of my thoracic vertebra. The lady who did the x-ray stated that she thought I would be sent back for more x-rays. She didn't say why. My doctor has not received a complete answer to her question about my spine. As I was due to have a full spine MRI we left it. The report from the MRI didn't mention thoracic vertebra rotation, so I guess there isn't any, or so slight they didn't mention it.
My other symptoms are;
One shoulder down (a dressmaker discovered this when making a dress for me, which didn't lie properly.)
One hip higher than the other
One leg shorter than the other (when I have trousers shortened, they have to shorten one leg more than the other.)
My ribs on the left side protrude more than on the right side. (This is noticeable at the front, not the back. I think a rib hump is more normal at the back.)
I do have degeneration throughout my spine and a small spinal canal, so it is hard to say what is causing the various pains and symptoms that I get. I have had a lumbar fusion due to spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra).
I believe that thoracic rotation is a form of scoliosis.
Do let us know what you find out. We can all learn from it.
Grade 2 spondylolisthesis causing severe stenosis + DDD
L4/L5 decompression (laminectomy) and PLIF 19th March 2010
Herniations at T12/L1, T9/T10 and T8/T9 (mildly indenting cord)
Significant cervical spondylosis from C3-C7
C3/C4 and C4/C5 are compressing the cord (mild to moderate)
Been referred to a neurologist to rule out MS
My GP gave me the 1-3 degrees estimate just by looking at my back. He sent me to get an x-ray, but I don't think I ever actually got a report of what he found.
It was at the chiropractor that I was actually shown an x-ray. They pretty much told me that I'd be fine, but they want to see me for another 15000 visits for this, that, and one other thing.
I had a physical rehab person once lay me on my side and try to force the 'sudden twist' back into place by pushing toward the center. All she managed to do is cause it to ache for the next few days.
I've been passed around a little over the last couple years (GP, 2 chiropractors, physical rehab). I'm afraid the only way I'll get a definitive answer is an MRI, which is simply out of the question for the time being.
I have few symptoms. My shoulders and hips are even, but I have an uneven gait and occasional pain in the middle of my back. I'm told my back is stable and that since I waited so long to actually seek care that it's likely healed in the position it is in.
I usually have back pain in my shoulders.. i had an xray before, and it seems that my shoulders are not aligned with the other shoulder.
