Hi,
I'm 66 and about to have a corrective titanium rod placed in my back to counter increasing spinal curvature. My scoliosis was diagnosed at age 11 and I've pretty much ignored it all my life until now. X-rays show that it has progressed and surgery is recommended.
What I would like to know from other members is what limitations they have to their life-style after recovery. Right now I'm pretty active, not overweight, and love yoga, hiking, biking. I think that the rod will involve only the thoracic spine.
Hello.........I am currently recovering from a fusion surgery due to scoliosis, degeneration, and stenosis. Will you have a fusion as well? I am fused from T10-S1. My surgeon told me that really the only lifetime restrictions would be: gymnastics, roller derby, touching my toes, and he said to stay off the football field. Other than that, once the fusion completes life should go on as normal. Probably better since my spine is not twisted anymore! I am only 90 days post op so I cannot confirm anything as of yet but I have lots of faith in my dr. Very compassionate and caring. Best of luck to you!
Scoliosis stenosis, degeneration, nerve damage and compression. 8/1/11 - DILF
8/3/11 - fusion T10-S1 w/hardware- spine anchored to hips
Hi and Welcome to Spine Health!!
Everyone is different and my fusions were lumbar, a little lower than yours. I am fused L1-S1. I can't play tennis (altho I never did!!) because of the twisting and landing. I had to give up running but can still ride my bike and swim.
Walking and hiking are good. I do stretching and flexibility exercises, core and upper body strengthening.
I am 62 now and my last fusion was in march. I have been very active all my life and even tho it is a long recovery from a fusion you can do most things. Just listen to your doctor about no twisting or bending after surgery.
Good luck.

L4 L5 disc replacement in 2004=causing nerve damage'Flexicore disc. 2006 fusion same level leaving adr in. Fusion did nothing to releive the nerve pain.Pain clinic=every injection procedure avalable inc, razadamy, ablation, nerve stimulater trial, morphine pump trial all failed. Pain can be described as burning pain in lower spine penetrating in to left buttock, down left leg. Refuse to take lyrica or nuorontin do to its side effect,Leaving me with norco, valume, and flexiril at night.Which these medications only help with the muscle aches and stiffnes does nothing for the nerve pain from the nerve damage sustained from the adr surgery.Coming up nov.19th 2009 Lami, and hardware removal from fusion, for hardware just causing more pain in other areas.Hardware block comfirmed hardware is also causing pain in diferent area aside from the severe nerve pain on left side.Emg showed some posible problem above surgery are at L3 L4.
