Wow, I can't believe it has come to this! Surgeons office just called to schedule my fusion surgery and now it is really hitting me!
Those that have had this surgery for ddd what was the final straw that put you over the edge?
I am starting to get frightened and am thinking I can handle the pain and surgery might make it worse!
just want some insight from those that have been there.
How long were you out of work?
How much pain relief did you get?
How bad was the pain prior and how often?
And a million other questions
Matt
Hi Matt,
I just realized you didn't get an answer yet. So many questions. I'm sure you can type in "back surgery" to search and you will find tons of posts about fusions.
I have had 2 lumbar fusions: L2-L4 PLIF and L4-S1 ALIF. I know I just went over this in another post but can't remember whose!
When the time comes for surgery you will probably know it, even WANT it because your quality of life stinks.
Your pain will be determined by your health before the surgery, the extent of the surgery itself, etc. and so on.
Both of my surgeries were done while a stay-at-home mom, so I can't help you with the back to work question.
Good Luck. I found the more I read of the surgery itself and of others' experiences was very helpful.
Also make sure to check out the "post-op must haves"
link.

I'm 10 days out and I wish I had this done 3 years ago. The pain of the pinch nerve was gone when I woke up and I have had no pain near to what I was going through before. I just think it's so cool to live in a world where these things can really be fixed. I'm just amazed. Drop me a note if I can answer any question.
He said, " When the pain and the incapability gets to interfere with life so much, that you want the operation so you can regain some of what you have lost." He was at the stage when he was in pain 24/7 as he does not tolerate pain medication well and now he is pain free.
