Muscle spasms can really hurt before or after surgery. My NS prescribed flexeril. Unlike narcotics or nerve pain medicines I find the flexeril works wonders with the spasms. Unfortunately, it takes what seems like an eternity to 'kick in' after I swallow one. This is me. I hope you call your doctor and see if he/she has a suggestion of something which might work for you!!
good luck.......Paul

Cervical stenosis and myelopathy (most symptoms permanant), DDD, OA, 13 surgeries to date (including 3 level cervical laminectomy, bilateral knee replacements, A-C joint resection in left shoulder), 13 MRI's, numerous lumbar and cervical ESI's, upcoming scheduled surgeries (resection A-C joint in right shoulder, lipoma removal from back, removal of 8.2 mm synovial cyst located in left facet joint of L4-L5 (may require fusion))
You are right Paul, Flexeril works pretty well I am on too. But I did stationary bike today for 30 minutes and believe it or not I feel very good. I had one episode since.
Hello Phil,
I am Jessica. Just call me Jess. I suffer from Cervical DDD and a buldging disc. I must agree with you on the before surgery part because that's all I have experienced so far. Thankfully, I haven't had surgery but I am looking into it in the near future if my PT doesn't get accepted. I am 18 and I have these HORRIFIC Musle Spasm. I had one so bad last night it hurt me like heck. Then again I was watching Walker with my mom and granny. And this guy was cracking people's necks. Ouch! -rubs neck- I felt every single one 'em litterly. I am not sure if thats what was causing mine so HORRIFIC last night but then again mine is like that almost every day. I hope you find some relief. Good Luck!
Love Always,
Jess

No question that muscle spasms can be very acute. But hopefully thats where it stays - acute.
There are times when you can get hit with a muscle tear, spasm, pull, etc and that any movement becomes so difficult.
The good news is that there are enough medications out there to keep them under control and keep them from becoming chronic.
Ron you are so right! Hopefully most people only experience the short lived acute muscle spasms. Those are easily controlled with things like moist heat, gentle stretching, massage, acupuncture .....

phil, no kidding eh, I never really new how bad a spasm could really get till after surgery. I never had neck or shoulder blade issues but for the first time a year before surgery, that lasted 2 weeks, then went away, leaving a trail of new symtoms,
After surgery, the pain in the shoulder blades, OMG, I thought I was gonna die, and they said spasms, I thought no, pre death, grrr, wow, valuim helped greatly,
