Hi everyone, I have been suffering from back pain on and off for the last few years but for the last 6 months or so it has got considerably worse. I have 2 young children, one who is only 15 months so still having to carry and lift him a lot. The pain is in my lower back and radiates to my left buttock and top of my left leg. It is so painful that I cannot lay on that side.

I have recently had an xray which didn't seem to show much but have had an MRI in the last four weeks and have not discussed results with anyone yet and yesterday I received an appointment for a CT scan on Wednesday of next week without any explanation as to why. I am very worried about what they have found for me to be sent for a CT scan. I know they are used for a lot more things than cancer but my father has recently been diagnosed and also a young family member as died aged 39 of cancer so I am quite vunerable at the moment.

Hope to be able to get some great support from all you guys in the same position.

  • Hi weensta,

Welcome to Spine Health. Are you able to call the doc's office and inquire about the reason for the CT? How sooon until you have an appointment to sit down with the doc and go over everything?

In the meantime what are they doing for you to help you with your pain?

Sorry to hear about your father and younger family member. I hope that things work out okay for your father.

Please jump on here and write any time. There will always be someone around to chat with or answer your posts.

    Hang in there,

  • Sorry that you are having problems. Your symptoms sound so much like mine did in 2003. Also, your comment about having a 15 month old that you have to lift and carry a lot compelled me to respond. We gained custody of our 18 month old granddaughter about the time my back symptoms started, and due to the fact of a bad family siutation, she was very combative, and I had to physically struggle with her much of the time to get her dressed, in the car seat, etc.
The point I am trying to make is try to do as little lifting and carrying of your child as possible, at least until you get a diagnosis. If it is a herniated disc like mine was, all that strain could be worsening your problems.
As for the ordering of a CT without discussing your 3-4 week old MRI results with your doc, I don't know what that could mean. I would have to call and ask a few questions, myself. Anyway, all of this is just my thoughts on the subject.
Good luck! I hope you have a good outcome!!
  • I am a 45 male and live in New Zealand. I have had a bad back now for just on 12 years. Back in 1997 I had a discectomy and laminectomy on L4/5 but it acheived nothing. I have suffered for a long time on pain medications and just recently I had a CT scan and another MRI and the specialist has decided he wants to perform another Discectomy/ laminectomy on L3/4 as he said that is where the problem now lies. I am concerned that if I have this operation it may not achieve anything and have to wonder how stable my spine will remain with more bone cut away. I have subscribed to Spine-Health for many years but just decided to join the forums etc and chat with others around the world with the same problems.
So Hi to everyone, hope to hear from some of you at some stage.
  • :) nzbatman, i see this is your first post and i want ot welcome you to the forum! are you getting two or three opinions with these decisions? that might be a good idea!you sound very frustrated and alone. you have come to the right place to talk and find people feeling just as you do. good luck and i hope you are given a correct diagnosis soon and start to recieve treatment. Jenny :)
  • Thanks for the welcome, much appreciated.
  • weensta, definitely call your doc asap and ask about your results and why the ct scan was ordered. it is your right to know. sometimes the unknown is much worse than the facts. stress can really make your pain worse so try as hard as you can not to worry too much until you know for sure that you have something to worry about. maybe they just need to get a better look at something that they saw in the MRI. try not to let your mind get too carried away and please let us know when you find out what is going on.

nzbatman, I too think that it is very important to get a couple more opinions on this. I had microD back in Dec 07 and feel that it has made my spine very unstable. have you tried all of the conservative treatments that normally come before surgery? I am not a doc but I think that if you have microD at two levels you are almost certain to be headed for a fusion. But talk it over with a couple of docs and see what their opinion is as that is always your best option. Good luck and keep us posted.
  • Welcome to SPine Health :)
