sciatic pain down left leg - this is killing me!

AnonymousUserAAnonymousUser Posts: 49,900
Hi there,

I'm new to this board, and am happy to have found you all. At least I don't feel so crazy now, as many people who are fortunate enough not to experience this pain simply cannot relate to how violent it is.

My problem seems to be from the L5 and L4 area, although my xrays yesterday don't reveal a herniated disc (just some gapping).

I have a desk job that requires me to be seated about 8 of the 9 hours I'm there.

Thankfully, my chiro wrote me a note to take a week off. I simply cannot sit! Whoever thought sitting could be such a pain in the a**?!

My real issue now is this: I've been getting adjustments for about a week now (a total of 4) and I feel WORSE.

Is this because the nerve root is inflamed/irritated?

When I slightly touch my rear end (like taking off/putting on my pants), horrendous pain zings down my left leg to the point of me involuntarily crying and screaming. And I'm no whimp.

I can't sleep in any position. On my side with a pillow in between my knees....on my back with ice under my L4/L5....nothing.

Will this get better? I don't want to imagine my future like this forever.

Please advise!

Thanks.....

  • :) well hi and welcome to the forum! we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. usually this is posted in the "Newcomer" section but we can say hello here and get some assistance on your problem. it could be you are having some nerve Pain in your leg, sciatica, and could use something like Lyrica to help. ~X( it would be a good thing to talk over with your doctor. many of us face trouble sleeping and find that naps do the trick when we just can't get in those long hours. I) please check out "Chronic Pain" as well for some more input. there is also a "Sleeping" section where you might get some tips. good luck and i hope to see you around the fourm! Jenny :)
  • thanks for your kindness!
  • Sorry to hear that you are in pain.If chiro manipulation makes things worse,I'd suggest you stop it.X-ray will not reveal a herniated disk. You need MRI done for this.In the mean time, ice it along with rest for a couple of days. Then try to move around and try some heat. But the most important thing is to get a definitive diagnosis.Don't let anybody treat you "in the dark" because it can do more harm than good.
    Hope yo feel better!

    Cheers,G.
  • Stop going to a chiro until you have been accessed by a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery. He could be doing more damage than good without knowing exactly what is going on in there. Please get checked out before you have any more "sessions". :)
  • I agree with everyone here. You should STOP going to a chiropractor and go to a neurologist and get a MRI. I started off going to a chiropractor and felt a little better but my friends kept encouraging me to go to see a specialist and I'm glad I did. I ended up having a herniated disk and those don't show up on XRay. Think of the damage that could have been done if I had kept going!!!

Good luck to you. That pain is the WORST pain I have ever felt in my life. You might see if your doctor could give you some pain medication just to take the edge off. It really makes all the difference in the world. I also have a desk job and I have to remind myself to get up every 45 minutes and walk around.

    Again, good luck!
