Left-Side disc protrusion with Extruded fragment 8-10 mm at L5-S1

AnonymousUserAAnonymousUser Posts: 49,731
For the last 1-2 months my left leg, Dull stabbing pain in left buttocks, down my hamstring to calf and then tingling in toes. Hurts most in morning and sitting for more than an hour.

Question is, the pain seems to go away mostly when I start moving around, walking, or doing things. When I sit for more than an hour the pain starts coming back.

The MRI showed Left-Side disc protrusion with Extruded fragment 8-10 mm at L5-S1.

Ortho Dr. said try cortisone shot first, see if helps. Are these cortisone shots good for the disc in the long run?

Dr. said if it doesnt help then the surgery that lasers off the protrusion.

Bottom line question should I get the surgery, is a 8-10 mm protrusion big or not? Will surgery help for the long run.

  • guarantees with either treatment. Most docs will try the more conservative treatments before considering surgery which is good. It is better to try all conservative treatments first before opting for sugery. From the pain that you describe and what brings the pain on it sounds very much like the pain that I have coming from my facet joints. Has the doc mentioned anything about possible facet pain to you? I would definitely try the injection first. Lots of times they use the injections as diagnostic tools also in order to narrow down what is actually causing the pain. Good luck and keep us posted.
