Left shoulder numbness and left arm and hand numbness

Seven years ago I had a L4/5 spine fusion. I had many many tests and I still have pain in my left leg and lower back and butt. I deal with the pain and the numbness in my leg just because I have to.

I had a discogram oh, five years ago which showed I have at least three other lumbar discs which are causing me severe pain.

The newest and most recent thing is that the rear of my left shoulder has pain and numbness and my left arm goes numb from the rear of the left shoulder all the way down my arm to my left thumb and first two fingers. This is really really annoying as it tingles and goes numb and it is usually at night when this happens. I know my neck is having problems because there are times when it seems like my neck can't support my head and I get stiffness and some pain in the back of my neck and my neck cracks when I move it left or right.

My question is this, is this possibly cervical problems? I know that the rest of my back is messed up. I also found out I have slight scoliosis and even though the doctor tells me that you CAN'T HAVE PAIN IN THE THORACIC AREA, I really do get shooting pains in the middle of my back.

Anyone with any ideas about the cervical area and what I would do about it. After the lumbar surgery, I certainly don't want to have surgery ever again.

Thanks for any help. :D

  • I am thinking it's the Ulva or Uvea nerve (not sure what it's called) that is in your neck that can cause these symptoms in your arm and shoulders if pinched somehow. I have this problem from time to time.

  • your description of "all the way down my arm to my left thumb and first two fingers." sounds like what I've had for years after fracturing C6. I believe its the nerve at the c6 or c7 level that sounds like something is irritating it. Just my guess based on my personal experience.
  • Hello.I'm having a lot of those symptoms with neck pain..shoulder,arm,thumb,fingers...similar in the areas you described, but I have a lot of pain with mine.I do have cervicle DDD and I'm seeing an OS on the 26th,but I don't really expect a diagnoses.I am just hoping for a test to find out what could be causing this.

Personally speaking,I won't have surgery until it is THE last resort, and even then I would wait as long as I possibly could, weighing all of the pros and cons.

My neck cracks constantly, but the Dr assures me that is just annoying and does'nt make the problem any worse. It is a symptom of my DDD.Have you had tests,x-rays,mri,on your cervicle area?

It sounds cervicle to me,but keep in mind that any opinions on forums should not used as a substitute for professional opinions.
  • Read that someone else has these EXACT same symtoms:
A stiff or sore neck when turning it to the left or right. Pain on back left side of the shoulder and comes down to the back of the arm. Mild numbness down to the left hand. However waking in the middle of the night with severe numbness in the Thumb and first 2 fingers. Very scary when waken to this because symtoms do not go away unless I get up walk around and continue to exersise the hand. Thru ignorance and fear have not been to the Dr. Is this a stroke coming on? Some days no problem other days the symtoms show themselves and last for days.
  • I have some options for you to try. It can't hurt if anything it could improve your symptoms some.
    1. buy a soft cervical collar to help take some pressure off the nerves in your neck.

    2. take anti inflams several times a day and keep them in your system. if there is any inflammation it will reduce it. therefor reducing pain.

    3. find a pool, get the water up to your chin and move the neck left to right and up and down. 3 sets of 10 each way. I do this every day I can get in my pool.

    4. I sleep with a travel U shaped pillow for relief from stiff necks. Its for comfort too. I lay slightly elevated also. so my neck doesnt get too stiff and tight.

    5. Massage therapy could feel good also.

Hope this helps. Its worth a shot. It may not take all the pain away but could reduce it so you can function. heat wraps and ice therapy could help too. good luck.

I have similar problems but haven't been to the doctor yet for an evaluation. I have fusing in my neck (I know this from xrays), and last week I had sudden shooting pain from my lower spine and just to the left of that. It also went through my abdomin and down into my groin, all on the left side. Then over the last few days, I've also developed pain in my thumb, index, and middle finger along with some numbness as well.

I'm pretty scared because I have Sarcoidosis and have had terrible health issues for the last several years.

I don't have any answers for you, but I'm hoping someone else will see both of our posts and be able to help.
