Surgical procedures for Facets?

So, I live in Montana, where finding surgical treatment is almost as hard as finding something fun to do besides drink here. =)) I have seen a spinal surgeon, who said nothing could be done, but that was 2 years ago. My question is, what types of procedures are out there for facet arthopathy? I have had epidurals, injections, and nerve ablations. Any info any of you may have would be greatly appreciated. I have googled this, but found nothing. :)))

  • I think the next steps after all that might be a fusion, which would, in the least, immobilize the joint, maybe stop the pain generated from movement.

Hope you can find a decent surgeon to have these discussions with.
  • I have been trying to get a diagnosis of what might be causing my pain for almost 6 years now. The latest Dr has started injections probably similar to what you have had. I have seen very little if any improvement. Since you have been diagnosed with the same problem, can you tell me more about what your symptoms are like, where is your problem located. I have gotten word that they can go in and burn the nerve with radio frequency, but I have received that info from a third party ( very knowledgeable ). I would like to hear what your symptoms are.

    Thanks,
    Zach
  • My Facets were a mess- facetectomy's were done with my fusion.

I live in Alaska and we have even fewer choice's than Montana :D

I think you guys need to seek second/third opinoins. You need to find out why your facets are messed up if possible.

In my case the specialist (pain manager/ anestesia did injections/micro discectomy) would have been happy giving me injections every so often. He said I wasn't a surgical candidate but did no further testing after the mri. I was sent for traction and PT and got worse.

I asked my PCP for a new referral and was happy to meet the NS/ he ordered new test that revealed the underlying problem.

There are some interesting atrticles/videos on this site that show the various treatments.

    Good luck,

    Julie

  • arthritis of the facet joints and is extremely painful. Before my microD I got amazing results from the rhizotomy (nerve burn) and got by for years with them. Are you sure that the doc that did yours burned the correct nerves? Were you awake during procedure in order to tell him when the pain was reproduced? I do believe that fusion is an option for our disease. Personally I am not willing to take the risk with fusion as the odds of success are not very high. I take methadone and wear a lumbar sacral brace brace and am hoping to get by until another procedure comes along with better odds of good results.
