Does anyone know of a website where you could check out information about doctors? Such as their reputation, how long they've been doing operations & such??

I've looked & couldn't find anything myself...other than places that want you to pay. Looking for something free...if there is such a place.

I'm having a single level fusion soon, so just wanted to makes sure he was a good Dr.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

  • The only thing I found was HealthGrades. http://www.healthgrades.com/

I do believe it will only show if the MD has had disciplinary action. So if they have been sued, but settled, it may not show up. Only if they were found negligent will they be disciplined and it goes on their record. I found a lot of info just by Googling my surgeons name. Good-Luck, Sue
  • Check out the states medical board. I can't remember exactly how I found it, but it gives you pretty much the same info as the post above mentioned. If any action has been taken, lawsuits, ect.. What I have found that works best is by word of mouth. I managed to find my last surgeon by my husband asking a lot of people, including a good friend of his who is a chiroparctor. My last surgeon has operated on football players, a couple of presidents, "VIP's". I figured if he's good enough for them, then maybe he's good enough for me too. The most important aspect to look for is someone who does only spines. Not just any old bone in the body. When my husband had his hip replaced, we went to San Diego to an orthopedic medical group and they have a specialist for everything (just the bones of course). My first surgeon, the one who made the mistakes, does surgery on all different parts of the body/bones. She was a regular orthopedic surgeon. Big mistake! Good luck!
  • If I remember correctly, I looked up the AMA disciplinary action site. If your doctor is not there, it means that there were no actions against him. As far as the number of similar surgeries he performed (an excellent question) you have to ask either his staff, of better still, the doctor himself. Some of the best info I got about the OS I selected to do my surgery, came from other doctors, my PCP, cardiologist, and doctors of other friends. If you can talk to some nurses who worked with him, especially in the OR, that is very helpful also. Make sure you check if he is board certified or not. It is great that you are doing your homework before your surgery, you will benefit from it.

    Good luck,

    Kin
