Hello everyone,
I'm Jay, I stumbled onto this site just researching disc herniations and their effects and possible remedies. Maybe find a little hope as well..

I've been suffering with low back pain and discomfort for some years now but this year is taking the cake I think. I'm really down an out about the whole thing. I've had MRI's, epidurals, facet joint blocks with no relief. I had a discogram monday and found what the main culprit was.

There is a full thickness annular tear posterocentrally and to the right of midline associated with a disc herniation with right S1 nerve root encroachment. there is mild neural foraminal encroachment bilaterally. This is causing pain and burning in the glutes, right thigh and knee, and also pain in the right ankle.

I'm still waiting for Doc to call me to let me know what my options are. I'm not expecting good news at all, but I could be wrong.. I don't know what to think. Anyway I've rambled on long enough. Thanks you all for listening

I forgot to mention the herniation is located L5-S1
  • Welcome to spine health..is you doctor going to refer you to a neuro-surgeon?
  • Not sure bigcat. I'm thinking that she will. She's been a great doc but I believe she did everything she could so I guess that would be the next step. I'm just so bummed out, I feel totally disabled.

  • I'm sorry to hear you're in so much pain. There's a wealth of info and support here; I've come to rely on it for so much and I'm so grateful for the forums, articles, chat room, THE PEOPLE... Just know that you're not alone in what you're dealing with and you wouldn't be normal if you weren't feeling the way you are!!!
Welcome, and I hope you find relief soon,
    ~Lauren

  • Thanks Lauren & Jenny

I appreciate the welcome and words of encouragement. This has been pretty difficult for me. I've always been an active guy. I was in the Army years ago and I am now in the Air Force Reserves as an MP. I was in Iraq for almost a year last year and felt pretty good physically while I was there. I like to run and have been able to until recently, I would hate to lose that. I hope that I can find some relief...Thanks again

  • jay- welcome to forum. It is hard to know what to expect next. I don't know if dr will meet in person or by phone but I would ask what options you have available and then maybe a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Perhaps ask for a spine specialist. It sounds like you are strong person serving in the service and Iraq. I don't know if surgery is next or not, but it may help to search the site as there are plenty of people with back pain who have been there..take care..jade
  • Thanks Jade,
I guess that's the hard part, not knowing what to expect next. I've been going to the doctor now for a few months. It seems like I'm always there. I'm sure I'll be spending a lot more time there as well. We'll see what she says on Tues.
