Disc above double fusion is failing

Hello
I had double fusion with instrumentation of my C5-7 back in March of '07, unfortunately my pain has gotten worse over time. My latest MRI and ex-ray show the C4-5 disc is failing as well as the disc above. The Doc wants to do a single fusion of my C4-5 providing a discogram doesn't provide anything on my C3-4.
What can I expect in range of motion from 1 additional fusion and also if I need 2 additional fusions.
Also has anyone had a discogram after a fusion surgery?
Thanks

  • You will lose a little motion for each fusion but in your case I don't think you notice it. You might when you tip your head backwards. Side to side and looking down should be very little difference that where you are at now.
  • Thanks for the reply
  • I had my 1st fusion on C5-C7 almost 3 yrs ago, then I started having problems with the level below, they ended up doing a lot of procedures and the last one they did was a discogram. It showed that the disc was leaking right away, it mimics your symptoms that you are already having, so for a couple of days afterwords you may be a little more uncomfortable, but in my experience it wasn't that bad. I am glad they did it because nothing else was showing the problem. I am now fused from C5-T1 and now the disc above the fusion are going, so I too am looking at a 3rd surgery. Good Luck with everything you are going through, if you would like to know more you can email me at: snuggles61268@yahoo.com, I try to get on this site quite often, but lately it hasn't been possible.

  • The discogram I had before the first surgery showed the C4-5 disc leaking during the CT scan following but the surgeon didn't want to operate on it at that time. I would assume if it were leaking then it will be leaking now. I'll keep you posted and thanks again

I just remembered at the time it (C4-5) wasn't creating the pain and that is why my surgeon decided against it
