I'm a 23yr old female. For the past 5yrs of my life I have been extremely active, healthy and living life. I'm currently active duty military, full time college student, wife and mother to a 10 month old son. Last week I was diagnosed with severe DDD, sciatica and radiculopathy. We're still waiting on treatment recommendations, but for the time being my life has pretty much come to a hault. I have put on a very light exercise regiment that has created a LARGE weight increase, I'm unable to hold/carry my own child and my quality of life has went from jumping out of bed, ready to go...to feeling helpless, pathetic and an unfit mother. I have trouble staying focused at work, I dropped out of college to help my level of stress. But things just keep getting worse. I'm on two pain killers and a muscle relaxer but because of work and my life style I cannot take one of the pain meds and the muscle relaxer. I do have a secretarial type job, but now sitting has become super uncomfortable, I have collaspe multipule times attempting to tie my boots. Someone, PLEASE tell me there's hope!!!!

  • Have you had an MRI? I would ask the Doctor for that test. I had a major weight gain also due to immobility and stopping work. The only excercise I can do is recumbent stationary bicycle because it gives some back support. Let your MD know also how you're feeling sad. People are very supportive here and friendly. See you around and let us know how you're progressing. Okay?

  • I did receive an MRI, that's how we found out what was going on. Because the military is so WONDERFUL in how they do things, I'm still waiting for the documentation saying/showing us everything. Right now they have me on 30mins of the stationary bike and no forward motion. Kind of difficult not to do that. I was originally told that my back was hurting because I was fat, that was 6wk after I gave birth. And since then it's been considered a muscle spasm, so I continued on with my normal life and now have reached a point where my supervisor has to lace and tie my boots at work, that last few times I tried I ended up face down on the ground screaming.

  • That is so brutal for Drs to say we're fat. My pain med Dr. said he hoped he could find the right spot for the epidural I had because there was so much tissue there. Then while getting the shot I got another lecture about weight. I'd like to see them try and lose weight after being immobile from our illness and/or bearing a child. Can you find another Doctor? or you're limited because of being in a rural area? Take care and hope you get the right treatment to ease your pain soon. Never give up hope. Charry

  • I have two negatives hitting hard with this issue, because I am in Alaska we do have a limit on specialist; but also because military requires that you exhaust all military options before referring someone out in town and if you choose to go out in town without a referral expect to pay for it. We are both very young and don't make money to cover something like this. I just don't know where to go from here. Even though, tomorrow we'll get all the dirt and find out what they want to do. Three meds still can't help dull out the pain. My life had to be drastically altered so that i wouldn't crush my son while putting him down, or falling while holding him. ~X(
