C5-6 Disc Protrusion with thecal sac impingement

Hello All,

I am rather to the whole back problem/neck pain. To be honest I am not having pain in my neck. From my shoulder blades to my bottom there is pain in varying level on both sides of the back. At first I had a few fingers go numb on my left hand and from the elbow to the hand (entire area) go numb. I have had an MRI done on the neck. The findings are: "C5-6 central Disc Protrusion with thecal sac impingement".

I have looked up varying parts and have not been able to really say I know what this means. I do have a basic understanding that a disk is pushing in on an outer area of the spine. I will be seeing a neurosurgeon in a few weeks as that is as soon as I am able to get in. My MD is not real sure what to do and my Chiroprator is the one that ordered the MRI and has refered me to the Neuro. Any advice/help suggestions. I would have thought that an MRI would have been complete on another area of my back where there is pain and in the lower right hand side there is a rib off set from the spine.

This has made life a big mess for me, my wife and my three kids that are used to me picking them up and playing with them. I am now a grumpy person that is very short and I am very saddened with how it is affecting my family.

Looking for help,

Bogard

Which does not do a whole lot to put me at ease for very long...

  • I was told the same thing this morning by the ER, where they did a CT exam. I have had this issue for 10 years after an accident 15 years ago caused my neck injury. I know one thing; if I raise my arms above my head and sneeze I will be pronate in bed for at least a week on pain meds. If i bend forward and reach out with my arms to pick up my newborn same thing happens. The pain is so immense that a actually see stars when the pain hits, and the pain is worst right between the blades even though its supposedly the neck with is damaged. I have a neuro appointment Monday where hopefully I will be a candidtae for surgery. We should keep in contact so I'll let you know how mine goes.
Good luck with your pain and I fully sympathize about the crankiness. My life has been crap for 10years now and I'm no better at managing the crappy attitude I'm in...
  • its understandable that amount of pain would make anyone cranky.Your situation doesn't sound too good.I would expect your surgeon to recommend surgery to you.If the disc is herniated to that extent then surgery to remove it or part of it would be best for you.NOt a doctor just my opinion.I had three discs flattening my spinal cord, when i finally saw a surgeon he said surgery was definite and it was a god send for me.Help my pain immensely. Good luck with your appointment.Let us know how you make out
  • has anyone looked into or had laser sugery performed by one of the SLI hospitals in FL. It's a very min invasive type sugery. Looks like a feasable option other then your insurance may not cover this type of surgery.
  • anybody had it? I wonder if most people on this board are forced into fusion due to insurance...
  • I am not sure what lazer surgery is, i know there are docs that perform minimally invasive surgeries. but according to my ortho doc most docs do not specialize in it because it does not pay much. I priced my surgery to be totaling 15k whereas a fusion could cost up to 100k. doc fees are a small part of that but still more than endoscopic cervical discectomies.
