Hi! I was hoping someone could answer a question for me.Would the family medical act pertain to me if I need to take time off of work to have surgery? My co worker told me the FMLA was for family members only that needed time off to care for a sick family members.I am afraid I will lose my job if I take time off for surgery.Also. I have pay premiums for short term disability. Do you know how long you have to be off of work before you can collect. I appreciate your answers because this is all new to me.

  • The family medical leave act(FMLA) is for yourself and or your family so yes will cover you I believe the time is 13 weeks but you may want to check that. The act has nothing to do with pay or benefits. As far as using your short term disability check with your benefits coordinator for the answers to that as each individual policy is different and vary by company as well.
