Hi, I am new here.. I am 27 years old..and have been having chronic neck pain and upper back pain for about 4 years. I had no insurance so my doc was doing shots on cortizone and litacane every couple months..Also he put me on percocet and soma.. 4 each daily for last 4 years. I just got married so now i have insurance.. I went to get MRI.. and its a disaster. I have degenerative disc disease. And cerical disc are buldging.. worst ones are c5-c6 and pinched nerves in spinal cord, colum? I also have buldging at c3-c4 minimal tho. Then at c4-c5 there is mild buldging.. And c6-c7 mild. SHE IS SENDING me to a specialist about surgery.. IS SHE KIDDING ME? My question is.. everything i have been researching talks about arm pain.. I have terrible pain in neck upper back and right shoulder cap.. NOT ARM>>OR LEG?? PLEASE give me input

  • I have the same issues...but I have never had arm pain either. I DO have tingling and numbness in my arms (mostly the left)-on and off. No pain though-never actually heard of anyone having pain in the arm for cervial/thoracic issues like lumbar pts have pain in the legs. (I am lumbar pt too-had a fusion 11 weeks ago-see my sig.)
  • Cervical problems can cause radiating pain in the arms just as lumbar problems do in the legs. It just depends upon where the nerve compression is taking place.

    Antounette,

Welcome to Spine Health. Please let us know what the specialist has to say. Sorry that you have had to deal with this for so long, but glad that someone was at least helping to control the worst of your pain.

  • CHRONIC PAIN IN NECK AND UPPER BACK!! IT TOOK YEARS OF XRAYS, MRI'S CHIRO'S, MASSAGES, CORIZONE, YOU NAME IT I HAD IT!! THEN MUSCLE SPASMS UNBEARABLE I WOULD HAVE TO THROW MYSELF ON THE FLOOR AT WORK AND BANG MY UPPER BACK SO HARD TO GET RELIEF!!SURGERY WAS NEVER MENTIONED, BECAUSE MRI ONLY SHOWED 3 BULGING DISC, THEY SAID THAT WAS NOTHING, IT WASN'T UNTIL THIS YEAR WHEN 2 MRI'S SHOWED STENOSIS MODERATE, THEN SEVERE, WITH PINCHING ON NERVES CAUSING SOME LEFT SHOULDER PAIN AND NUMBNESS IN LEFT HAND, THEN SURGERY WAS THE ONLY OPTION, BECAUSE THINGS HAVE CHANGED SO MUCH FOR THE WORSE!! WELL THEY THOUGHT UPPER BACK PAIN WOULD BE THE FIRST THING TO GO AFTER SURGERY!! WELL THE SPASMS WERE UNBELIEVALBE AND THE PAIN HORRIBLE!! I AM ONLY 2 WEEKS POST OP BUT HE THOUGHT THAT WHEN HE WOKE ME UP FROM SURGERY I WOULD FEEL GREAT!! HE DID NOT EXPECT THIS AND SAID HE HOPES IT IS JUST TEMPORARY!! WELL THE NUMBNESS IS GONE, BUT THE PAIN AND SPASMS ARE WORSE THAN BEFORE. I HOPE IT ALL CLEARS UP IN A FEW WEEKS! I HAD ACDF C4-6 2 DISCK REMOVED BONE GRAPH FROM BANK, I HAD SEVERE STENOSIS, WHICH IS WHY SURGERY WAS DONE, HE SAID THE HERNIATED DISCK WERE NOT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PAIN!! I ALSO HAVE BURSITIS IN LEFT SHOULDER HAD SURGERY ONCE ON THAT. TENDONITIS BAD IN LEFT ELBOW HAVE TO HAVE SURGERY FOR THAT!! JUST TIRED OF PAIN EVERYWHERE, MY FAMILY THINKS I'M CRAZY!! I HAVE BEEN SUICIDAL OVER THIS CHRONIC PAIN!! BUT YES UPPER BACK AND NECK ARE BY FAR THE WORST!! CHIRO HELPED SOME!! WAITING TO SEE WHAT THIS SURGERY DOES!!
  • So sorry you are in such pain. I have lumbar issues, so cannot directly relate to you.

Hint: Please don't use all caps--it makes it very difficult to read your post.
  • I have the same issue and my surgeon canceled my surgery at the last minute when I said my chief complaint was my upper back, although I have my surgery re scheduled, I have the BEST PT! He told me the pain was in the path of the nerves being pinched and it is the body's way of protecting or some stuff like that, anyway the muscles got so tight they pulled ribs out of place and it took him almost 2 months of bruising me to no end to do it, even though the process was so painful it was a relief as well, i dunno, kind of weird, like you said you want to fall on the floor and bang your back. But my therapist said my posture has my shoulders pushed in like a turtle shell and if I do not correct my posture he said the surgery will not help, so he is giving me exercises to pull my shoulders back and stretch the chest muscles out. I hope this helps, any questions feel free to ask!
