guys i had to start this thread . . . . on a lighter note . . . i was wondering if anyone has had any funny things happen while wearing their neck collar.

i gotta share these two with you. i just about fell off my chair laughing and almost injured myself again.

1) i was walking with my son to the park in my good old miami j collar. i also had the neighbors kids with me. i arrived at the park and get this . . . . .some guy actually tried to pick me up. told me i was HOT and that THE NECK BRACE DID NOT BOTHER HIM.-----> come on!!! u for real buddy???? :O

2) in the grocery store i had some elderly gentlemen offer up his son to me to push the grocery cart and load my groceries. he literally went to find his son and sent him over to my isle. i told him i was flattered and that he is very considerate but my mother was with me. of course she was no where in site and the guy thought i was BSing him. :))( i told him i thought his dad needed more help.

  • :? Roxy, The way I see it, offers of help are better then no offers of help so enjoy. Since my doctor does not believe in collars I have just the opposite which is no offers of help when out (except from family). The other day my husband and I went out to dinner and it was raining so he dropped me off. The doors to the place were very heavy and with a 5lb no push/pull lift restriction, I figured I should not open them. Since I look healthy no one offered to open the door for me so I had to wait for my husband to park the car and walk to the place. Of course some folks had gone in while I waited and they would have held the door but I would have had to take it from them and it did not seem like a good idea.

The worse thing that has happened was I was going into a ladies room one day while out and a women who went in before me with a cane fell down. Normally I would have been right at her side helping her up but I knew I could not possibly help her up. I was going to get help but she managed to get up by herself. I felt awful. Of course since I was not wearing a collar she had no way of knowing I had recent neck surgery.

i tell everyone that if they want some extra attention they should just get a cervical collar and walk around the grocery store.

i wish i could get out of this collar. my DDAY is dec04!!!

    wow . . . about a month away.
  • I got to meet RUSH and was also the only guy except the buddy with me who got to carry their cameras in and take pics, also got side stage seating...who knew? Also got best parking at stadium and even tried to explain to policeman I didn't need it but they insisted so while everyone was sitting in line afterwards waiting for hours to get out i got a police escort to the front of the lines both times. I think I would rather be without the perks though. I have actually used the brace to get help for peeps who really need it and are over looked. I just act like I am with them and they get all kinds of help. I love to see the look on sales people face when they realize they aren't helpoing me but they are helping the senior citizen standing behind me. I gET A KICK OUT OF IT. :$
  • lol . . . .how are u feeling by the way?

    Roxy,
My Mom has a lot of spinal issues also. She is 79 and has partial paralisis in one leg but is still able to walk with a cane and some difficulty. She said even though she is a senior and walked with a lot of difficulty, no one ever offered her much help until she got a cane. Now people are always offering to help when she is out.

This is most likely the only reason why I would find a collar of use. I go out and then I realize there is something I can't open or something I can't pick up and I look healthy so how do I ask for help. I have to wait for my son to come home from work or my husband so they can go places with me.

  • I don't have a collar, but i have a cane and i even have older ladies stand up so I can sit down on the subway. Most men just sit and pretend they're sleeping. Oh well at least some care. Charry

  • I wear a soft collar sometimes (Im 26) at school...I feel like people are looking at me wondering what her problem is with her neck, and does she really have a problem? Like I use it sometimes to help with a little less pain.

I just don't want special treatment as it is just a soft collar.
  • I'd like a collar...I want special treatment and statements of hotness...and I want a cane too.I've had 7 operations on my feet and could use a cane and a collar...I don't even use a disabled license plate and I've been on disability for 12 years now...but I want the specail treatment allofasudden.. :))(

Actually I seriously was wondering if a collar would help my pain..I could wear it around the house, and I'm home most of the time.Just a week or so ago a weird thing happened with my neck that made me think that I should ask my Dr at my next appt about the collar.I had just woke up and was walking into the kitchen to turn on the coffeepot,as I was walking thru the hallway my head kind of 'fell' sideways,as if it was going to roll off of my head.It didn't last more than a second and I had total control again, but it scared me enough to remember it and think about the collar.Nothing like that had ever happened and though I do have cervicle DDD I had never read anything that mentioned this as a symptom.

...but I like the idea of extra help.. 8>

love the comment about the old ladies offering u a seat. i tell yah the things that have happened to me since May of this year are just hilarious.

i told my single friends to go out and get one.
  • That definitely does not sound normal by any stretch of the imagination! When's your next Dr's appointment?

  • "C",I go to the Dr on the 18th and plan on telling her. This is my PCP and I'm pretty certain that she will want x-rays.I've had the x-rays of the upper cervicle..the part where they can only get the picture by taking it through the mouth, and you have to open your mouth as if you're at the dentist. But that was a few years ago,and then another time about 10 yrs ago.So I remember having problems in that area of my very upper neck before, but honestly cannot remember what.I thought it was just arthritis.I remember my old Dr (in PA) saying something about the part of the spine or bone that holds your head up...but it's embarrassing that I don't remember what he said now.

I haven't even told anyone(in my family) about this happening because it did/does bother me..the feeling of lack of control is what bothers me about it.My Dr takes me pretty serious,so I'm sure she's going to want something looked into.Have you ever heard of such a thing though? I haven't had an injury.

I was laying in bed imagining my neck degenerating clean through, and thought the collar might help(lol),but then thought I'd better do more neck excercises. The last endocrinologist I saw told me that I had the biggest neck muscles she had ever felt on a womens neck tho,and that made me feel freaky.
  • My neurosurgeon told me the best thing that I could do since I have such a horrible imbalance of my neck and shoulders, is to work them normally and allow the body to compensate in whatever way it is going to. My neck looks really funky and so do my shoulders and when I go to the gym and work upper body, it really looks bizarre, but I trust the man and so far it has kept me stronger than if I were to "target" certain muscles.

Until you know more, you could wind up doing more damage than good. Tight muscles pull the spine in funky ways and if you are compressing something without really knowing what or why ...

The 18th is only a short time away. If it happens again though before that, can you call the doc and let her know?

    "C"
  • ...And Thanks for sharing that.I understand everything you are saying and I'll not target my neck until/unless I'm told to.I hadn't thought that I could damage it and realize that I was trying to hard to make it stronger..not thinking of the rest.

I know you've had cervicle issues so I respect your opinion.Thanks.
