MRI results

Hello, this is an update about my condition (originally posted in "Sciatica for over 6 mos."). I have had sciatica (left side only) for nearly 11 mos. now; the pain is worst in my lower left leg and pretty much constant. I finally went to a clinic for uninsured/low-income and they did Xrays; two days later I was told I have DDD and arthritis. I went for an MRI 4 days ago and got the results today: "broad-based disc bulge with left paracentral protrusion component; disc material effaces the left lateral recess and likely efaces left L5 nerve root." The conclusion says "left paracentral disc protrusion L4-5 with effacement of left L5 nerve root." This is not entirely clear to me; all I understand is that I have a disc herniation at L4-L5 compressing the sciatic nerve. I've been told I need to see a spine specialist.
Unfortunately, I have no insurance and don't qualify for Medicaid. Indigent funding paid for the MRI but they don't cover doctors or physical therapy (I am being billed for the radiologist). I already have bills from another surgery I underwent earlier this year.
I'd like to know if anyone else had a similar condition; if so, what treatment did you undergo? I am in pain all the time. I have hydrocodone to take at night so I can sleep; I am also on Elavil for nerve pain.
I take short walks a few times a week, maybe 15-20 minutes, and this does not relieve the pain. (I had been told one should exercise and stretch to help sciatica. I do nnot believe it helps in my case.)

  • I take Lyrica for leg pain and sciatica pain. Also anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxant, flexeril. Can the free clinic Dr. supply the meds? Are you able to work still? Or maybe get on disability benefits. I'm not American so don't know all what they have there. I hope you find some answers soon. Take care. Charry
