Hello everyone! As you see, I am new to this forum. I need support and information regarding my back pain. I fell on a wet cement carport in July 2008. Needless to say, I hurt my back. I went to the gp and he did a quick xray and told me that my tailbone was cracked, but other than that, everything looked okay. He prescribed Darvocet which worked about as well as asprin. I saw him 3 more times for the pain. He then ordered a bone scan. The gp did not see anything abnormal on the bone scan so once again he prescribed pain meds. These were a little stronger. Pain was persistent so, I had an mri. This time it showed a problem and he referred me to a neurosurgeon. I saw the neuro dr and he was very sympathic to the pain so he changed my pain meds, ordered a myelogram and cat scan. I got the results back and now he has sent me to a pain mgt dr. The cat scan and myelogram show "protrusion of L3-5 and an impenged nerve" Does that meam I have a bulging disk and pinched nerve? It is confusing to me because my back hurts constantly, even with the pain meds(lorcet 10) I still have the underlying ache and pain. If I sit on a flat surface, i.e. straight chair, toilet or any other hard surface my right foot becomes numb. I still have feeling in it, but it becomes cold and reminds me of carpal tunnel. What on earth do I do? My family is about as supportive as a box of rocks. They don't see that this pain is real. They think I'm just complaining. So whats next. Sorry this was such a long post! :S

  • I have a similar issue - get to a pain specialist who knows what is going on. Mine has taken 5 years to locate the trigger point, but it took 6 months with my current doctor. My pain used to be excruciating after sitting for a few hours, and the meds hardly work, but a combination of Mobic, Ultracet and Norco works well, but still know its there. Our findings are "where" i feel the pain, is not even close to the "trigger" point...i cannot understand it, but i have to get a combination of injections in the side of the cheek to reduce the pain in the center...go figure. Not sure of your location, but my doctor is ***EDITED***...and she works miracles. Your left leg thing sounds like the sciatica, same is me...it is a process to locate the trigger point, but i used 3D to help guide her and it worked well. Feel free to email me as i do not read these things, but when i saw your issue, i thought "maybe" i can give you some "hope" and help - i know what you mean when you say "they" do not understand.
    Good luck!!!

  • Your Pain management Dr. has all the consrvative treatments as in injections to help your pain. Heat has helped my backpain and after injections ice is soothing. I bet no family understands unless they've been through it. It's a lonely road while in pain and glad I have met everyone here.Surgery is a last resort for most people even if there is nerve damage. You have to keep on top of your own treatment including asking for proper pain medications. I'm not sure of protruding disc is just bulging? but if it's touching the nerve it must be painful. Wish you all the best in your healing. Charry

  • I am so sorry to hear of your pain. Also very sorry that your family does not understand. You are not alone. There are lots of people here that have no family understanding and support. It is very hard for people to understand pain if they have never experienced it. Good luck to you and I hope that you find relief soon.
  • I did get an appointment to see a pain management dr. on 11/10 .....wow, hows that for quick, fast and in a hurry? I just don't know what to expect. I certainly do not want to see him on my first visit with with a list of all the treatments I've had so far, i.e.,tried physical therapy 3 times a week for 3 mons and it didn't work, can't walk for exercise because of the pain and I;m on a diet!

I'm allergic to Ultram, Darvocet works as well as tylenol and I hurt! Thus far, I have been prescribed lortab 10 by the referring neuro surgeon. It works for about 4 1/2 hours and then begins to wear off, but I still have to wait at least 1 1/2 to take my next dose (prescribed 6 or 8 hours). I guess I fear what many people do. I don't want to be seen as a rx seeker. I really don't want to add any more to my collection. I already take enough as it is. I'm bi-polar (thats an entirely different story). I take 2 rx for depression, 1 mood stabilizer and something to help me sleep at night. Adding to this collection is not what I want to do. I just need some kind of pain relief that will work. I can't do laundry(lifting),washing dishes(standing) or sit because of pain/numbness. The only thing I do is lay on a heating pad with it propped under my back! Oh well so much for my whining. I know there are others of you in much worse situations than I am. I just needed a sympathetic ear or computer monitor to lean on for a few minutes! :(
