Does anyone take this combo for chronic pain? Just wondering? I have been on Fentanyle pain patches for two years and just came off about a month ago. I have about a 10 day suppply of tramadol and saw that it could be good for nerve/sciatic pain? I've been on topamax for a couple years for migraines. Is this a good combo? Has it worked for anyone? I need help...I can't do my daily activities...much less with joy and have 5 kids.

Thanks

  • I used to take Topomax and it is for nerve pain. I do not believe that Tramadol is for nerve pain. Topomax worked very well for my nerve pain I just could not deal with the side effects of it. Maybe you need your dose adjusted since you have been on it for 2 years.
  • I take both Topomax and Tramadol but don't get much relief from the tramadol so I also take dillaudid/hydromorphone. I hope it works for you. Good luck!
  • I had to switch from the Tramadol to hydrocodone, as the Tramadol was not strong enough (did work initially though).

Topamax works well for nerve pain but I have also had to increase my dosage, as I've built up a tolerance there too. I've now added Neurontin in addition to the Topamax.

Surgery is in a few weeks, hoping to stop taking all of them! ;))
  • Tramadol does not work for nerve pain, it is a mild pain medicine. I was on it for over a year, it also has a SSRI in it which is in anti depresant drugs. I've never taken topamax, but have take lyrica and not I am taking neurontin. The lyrica and neurontin work well for nerve pain for me.

  • I was on lyrica for some time and when I first started it, I could tell it worked, but as you all know, after a while...it seems the meds wear off. I was put on Topamax for migraines...had no clue it could help with nerve pain...but it did help me shed any excess weight I had...so having an "abnormal BMI" is no longer an issue with my pain. Pain is still there. Surprise, surprise! Since coming off the Fent. patches, I don't have anyting for pain, and have about 30 left over tramadol pills and searched that some docs give it for neuralgia (which is what sciatica is lumped into)...so I thought I would try 3 a day until I dreadfully go back to the doctor. I'm a little afraid. I feel so tempted to throw a fent. patch back on when I'm having 8/10 days. I haven't seen my pain doc in almost 2 months...since I went in tearfully telling her how horible of a month I had trying to come off my patches (which was MY OWN reqrest, btw). B/c I was crying, she referred me to a shrink. I have seen her for 2 years and absolutely love her. I was on about 12 meds when I went to her and have weaned myself to almost nothing. I've been seeing her 2 years and have maybe cried twice...you guys know how it affects our lives. I've had it. It really hurt that she wanted me to see a shrink. I need a doc who has had this pain and understands what it's like to live with everyday. That would be ideal. I like a quote I saw on this board...that if you cry to your doc...you seemed depressed, but if you look happy, they think there is no way you can be in as much pain as you say. It's so hard.

Oh, and btw, the max dose I can be on of Topamax is 50mg twice a day or else I'm stupid and forgetful. When I backed off to 50mg...I was fine.

    thanks again for your support
  • Boy oh Boy, everyone I hear says the side effects of Topomax are horrible. My Dr suggested it and Lyrica at my first appointment but never brought it up again. Is the Topomax worth trying? Can you drive while taking it?
  • I've had good results with Topamax, and yes, you can drive while taking it. When people say it affects short term memory, its not that you black out. You forget yout hair stylist's name, or your stop mid-sentence and forget your train of thought. You become a little stupid, but not in a life-threatning way. Just is a dopey way. Hence the term "dopamax". At least that's been my experience. =)) =))

Its also done a number on my appetite, I've lost 16 lbs. Added benefit, makes up for the memory loss!!! :O
  • When I first started on it, I was having migraines and they started at a higher dose...I couldn't tolerate 100mg twice a day b/c like aimless said, it would make me stop mid sentence at times and forget what I was saying...like a street name for instance...nothing horrible...so, yes you can certainly drive and be a Mommy. When I backed my dose to 50 mg twice a day, I no longer had the "dopy" issues at all and I lost about 45 lbs in 6 months. That's a great benefit when you have it to lose, but others who are small to begin with complain about it.

I went to my regular doc and not my pain doc and he was so wonderful. I gave him the report from my surgeon and the very restrictive list of physical capacities I was given and he gave me pain meds and was so willing to treat me until I feel better...knowing it will take months to heal my disc. It was a relief. He mentioned adding Lyrica too...I may do that too b/c it sure helped with my cervical disc problems before and this this I have more "nerve" pain, so I bet it will help.

Let me know if you have any more questions about Topamax...
  • Dear Sweet and Holy Jesus - Tarheelgirl - if you are taking both of these medications, please stop one or both. You'll probably have to ween off of them, but here's an example of what could happen. My wife and I were married happily for almost 10 years and we have two boys. She started taking both of these medications at the same time and all of a sudden she cheats on me, she has tried to kill herself, she has dizzy spells, headaches, and she blacks out. I hope every day that all of this is because we just - grew apart - and she has some other medical issue, but the literature available online is damning about these drugs independently and if mixed.

Good luck - take care of yourself

  • This is a REALLY old thread! You're almost better off starting a new one :)

But I've been on Topamax for a while now, I was on 200 mg for a while, on 100 mg now. I had side effects similar to yours.
