=(( I just found out that I am pregnant two weeks ago and have seen 3 doctors for advice due to all of the medicatons I am on. I have done so much research on my own - but today I saw my PM Dr and he also said that I needed to terminate the pregnancy due to meds and my condition. So here I turn for help and grasp at a last minute reprieve.

I have four bulging discs L4 - S1 and nerve damage to add to the pain of the sciatica which accompanies the bulges. Then there are the medications: neurontin 2900mg per day, duragesic 50mg x 3 days, cymbalta 60mg per day, vicodin 1000mg 3xday, soma 700mg day, vitamin b series, ducolax 1000mg per day, colace 100mg per day......since most of these meds are class C drugs,,,,the docs said that the baby would most likely have issues his or her entire life. Has anyone been prego while taking these meds? I am especially interested in the neurontin, fentanyl and cymbalta

I appreciate your prayers as we do not believe in abortion, however we will do what is best for me and the baby.

  • I feel for you - bless your heart. Will be thinking of you susan
  • Here is a link for you...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy_category..i will say a prayer for you...
  • I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this and now you are Pregnant, how far along are you? I feel your pain, about weather to keep the baby, Only you can answer that, but you have to do what is best for both of you, I know me at this time it is hard for me to even lift a gallon of milk let alone a baby, i could not handle at this time, have you had any previous Surgery? wow you r on alot of Med"s hope that they r helping with the pain,i take 5mg of vicoden once daily in the morning or like now cannot sleep cuz of pain and soma 350 mg twice a day but since the pain is worsen i take the soma 3 time a day.. no- sleeping pills i wish but doc said i am not sleeping cause of the pain and he does not want me on them,go -figure.i do need stronger meds but trying to hang in there, because i need another surgery, i would like to wish you the best of luck, and i hope everything works out for you, and i hope the baby will be alright,It must be so hard for you, especially now you are expecting take care of yourself,,,
  • is all I can says since I don't know medicine. Or trust in the Lord but He doesn't always answer our prayers the way we think he should.

I'm sorry for your back problems and the important decision you will soon have to make, either way, to keep or abort. I wish you the best and my heart breaks that such a young person has to be in so much pain.
  • I want to thank all of you who have responded. I am 7.5 weeks and wait to see yet another specialist. so far I have had 4 tell me that I could not carry this baby. however, I do not belive in abortions so I am not sure where I am at....other than just needing to give this to God
  • This is a choice that only you and your partner can make. Some medications warn not to take them while pregnant or nursing and I'm sure the warnings are there for a reason. However, there are many mothers who take far worse things during pregnancy and have "healthy" babies all the time. You, unfortunately, have the added issue of chronic pain and the decision to make there as well. It's hard to care for a healthy baby when we're well and it sounds like you're far from being well.

I don't envy you this terrible time in your life and while I'm not overly religious this is a time to pray for your family. I hope you find the answers that you are looking for.

All the best to you, please keep in touch with us and we'll try to help you through this difficult time.

    Griff
  • I am so sorry that you even have to consider this decision.I too take a lot of meds and had Mirena inserted to make sure that I don't get pregnant. Please keep your faith and do what you and your partner feel is right. Those are some major meds so if I were in your position, I would be totally at a loss. I am glad that you continue to research and seek additional medical opinions. I noticed on your sig that you have 5 kids. Having another baby with your back condition and all those meds with 5 kids would be hard enough given the baby didn't have any problems. I will pray for you and whatever decision you make, please know that I will not judge you either way.

I am sorry that you are put in this situation.
  • my wife stopped all meds when she was pregnant. if you take narcotics, baby could end up going though withdrawl symptoms. i do not believe in abortion. you can ask dr to go through rapid detox where they put you out and give you meds to get you off narcotis it takes about 8 hours and you are asleep. if i had to go off i would do this. if pain is so bad you can't exist without meds i don;t know what i would do. my wife did not even take an aspirin or even alcohol, nothing. any drug can affect health of baby my wife's sister drank though pregnancy and baby died at childbirth. it was severly deformed

I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.
  • This is a very tough issue and a difficult place to be in. You are in the early development stage in your pregnancy where these medications have the most effects. Years ago when I was pregnant, I was on regular medication too. My doctor told me it was relatively safe, but I decided to stop altogether , not wanting any additional risks to the baby. In my second pregnancy, I had to be on demerol for a couple of weeks because of bad ligament pain that made it hard to walk, and my other baby came out fine, despite of also having preterm labor stopped at 30 weeks.
I can't tell you what you should do but only do what you think in your heart is right. I am truly sorry that you have such a heart wrenching decision to make. Please don't feel guilt over the medications you have taken, you did not plan for this to happen. You were just trying to take care of your pain so that you can raise your family. I take practically the same meds as you just to be able to function. I hope that your husband and family are supportive through this most painful time of your life. We are here for you whenever you need us.
  • I'm not advising one way or the other but you also have to remember how much pain you are going to be in without meds and carrying a baby. Like said above, this is not your fault and I am sorry that you have to make this decision. I don't beleive in abortion either but if I was faced with this decision I would have to consider aborting the baby because of the potential harm that has already been done to the fetus and the potential additional damage to your back while carrying the baby. My heart goes out to you. :X
  • member here that is going through the same as you. Just found out that she is 4 weeks along and has recently had steroid injections, xrays, MRIs and on strong pain meds. I hope that she will respond to this post but I am not sure how private she wants to keep this. She has a two year old and she did have to take pain meds through that pregnancy. The child was born prematurely but other than that he is fine. I really feel for you and would not want to be in your shoes. Good luck on making the decision.
  • FIRST LET ME SAY CONGRADULATIONS ON YOUR PREGNANCY!!

I am the girl pain in the back is talking about. Firstr let me tell you your pain management doctor is not an obgyn!
My doctors didnt even blink an eye about my medications i told them i was taking when i got pregnant 3 years ago, i was on all kinds of pain medicine.plus, valium for [panic attacks] and zoloft.
and my doctors where concerned more about the zoloft than all the other meds. valium is a bad class d drug catorgorie and they said my panick attacks and anxiety need to be treated because they would cause more harm to the baby then the medication.

next my son was born premature 6 weeks early.. NOT FROM MY MEDICATION!!!! From a incompetent cervix from previous surgery and from being 38 years old plus i smoke.

most children born 6 weeks early they said he needed to stay 3 weeks they need to reach 37 weeks gestation before they leave due to breathing problems [lungs not mature] and feeding [problems with sucking the bottle] well my son didnt even stay a week.

he was born 7lbs. 2oz. 6 weeks early, never needed help breathing and never had one single problem. the doctors said maybe his dates where off cause he was doing so well and his weight was good. but it was not off as i had a previous ectopic pregnancy and i was monitored with hcg blood test right from conception. so he was early.

my pc doc who prescribes my meds had to talk to the obgyn before he gave me my meds after i told him i was pregnanct and yes i was aloud to take my medicine. of course you will be monitored.

my son was a little floppy right after birth which they knew because of the medicine but thats it. and they had a icu team ready because they knew what i was taking and i was a high risk due to my age.

Do not let our pm doctor tell you different, unless it effects your health or danger to yourself.

I JUST FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT AGAIN AT 40 YRS. OLD NOW.

I just had xrays and then epidural with fluroscopic shots in my spine and 2 mri's and one with contrast!

my obgyn said that i would have miscarried by now and thats it! and i didnt . not to worry it was early enough to cause damage but a chance of miscarriage which they doubt.

I again told a obgyn the medicine i am on and it was no big deal, same office different doctor than last time[he retired]. So i will continue to take my medicine but cut down toward the end alittle by choice not because i have to. and believe it or not for some reason when i pregnant my pain levels go down, [probaly due to all the extra blood in the body during pregnancy]brings more to the spine, my thought only!

i am about the same amount of weeks pregnant as you, so we should keep in touch and good luck.

by the way my obgyn started taking over for my primary care doctor because i had to go there often due to high risk [BECAUSE OF MY AGE ONLY] And wrote my pain and other medicines prescriptions for me so i didnt have to go to doctors all the time since i was going there weekly.

pain meds are a catorgoriy c drug, not proven in human studies to cause damage, i did my research too!

they are safer then advil, motrin, which we can not take during pregnancy.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR THIS IS MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND I WOULD NEVER TELL ANYONE WHAT CHOICE TO MAKE IN THERE LIFE. I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THERE IS HOPE AND I WAS NEVER TOLD TO HAVE AN ABORTION DUE TO MEDICINE. But i was told to have one due to a low hcg and progestorone reading prior to my pregnancy with my 2 year old.

Good luck and please let me know how you make out.

    sincerely,
    dawn

  • Logically, the most important is the health of you and the baby, medicines you take are very strong and could affect the development of your pregnancy, I hope that the doctors recommend you the best, for my part here http://***EDITED*** find more information on that Soma is one of the medicines they take.

  • I was still planning on having a baby when I became disabled and was put on pain med's. Due to the fact that I was afraid of what the med's would do to the baby, and then the fact that there was no way that I could carry a baby without them, I had to make that difficult choice to give up my hopes and dreams of ever getting pregnant. I've never had any children of my own, I did inherit stepchildren when they were already teenagers. It's just not the same. As time goes by the pain of never having a child really hurts, but I have mostly come to terms with it. I'm really sorry that you are facing this decision after you are already pregnant, and I hope that you make the decision that is best for you and your baby. You have my support whatever that decision may be. I'm truly wishing the best for you and am sending you a big cyber hug. I may not have any advice, this is such a personal decision, but my heart does go out to you.
    Big Hugs,
    Topfuelfan
  • I feel i must right more about your situation, as it has been bothering me all day. and you are gonna get alot of opinions about medicine's.

Just so you know and we all most likely know by now its in many post's here. PAIN MED'S get a very bad rap, we are judged at times and alot of people dont understand our pain.

I didnt plan on having chronic pain and a bad spine, Nor did i plan my last two pregnancies, but the what cards i have been dealt. Pain medicines are strong, but there are many pregnant women that need to take them for various reasons, not just back pain.

I do want to reccommend one thing to you when you register at the hospital if you decide to keep the baby. In advance talk to the social workers and let them know you are being monitored on pain medicine. Because you will be judged ! most likely by the social workers at the hospital. I was, and had to prove them wrong, A nurse said i was taking more than prescribed of my medicine. OK i said drug test me and here is my pill bottles, i cut down my medicines by over 3/4 taking sometimes a half a pill a day of each and im aloud 4-6. so i straightened them right out just by saying heres my bottles and heres my doctors number and heres my pharmicist number.

the conversation didnt last long, I said are you judging me!!! and she said no its just procedure because of your history, oh a nurse said.. blah.. a nurse on one shift here know me i said? she seen me taking medicine??? anyway it hurts especially when your emotions are changing from hormones and such. so i was pretty pi**ed. but forgot to mention that in earlier post and also another thing i feel like i need to mention because i see some replys saying how bad the meds are for pregnancy.

For the average normal person the medicines are strong, but it depends if the mothers medical need's of medication out weighs the risk of harm to the baby. You an your obgyn can sit and talk about this.

Maybe your on a antideppressant that they may want to change to a safer one and so on, with the meds. maybe a few little sacrifices. But a good obgyn will understand and weigh out the risk's. me and my doctors sat there while he looked up every medication i was on and catorgorized it and also talked to my pc doctor. all agreed it was in the best interest for my child not to detox or withdraw and not to suffer in pain and having severe panic attacks would cause more harm to my pregnancy than the valium, etc. etc.

I am gonna tell you a story that i should keep private but just so you can see risks and what meds can do.

My father was addicted to pain medicine and anything else he could get his hands on, while i was 5 months pregnant i just got my refill for 100 vicodone and i was visiting him and had them in my purse he switched the pills with a pill that looked just like vicodan, the pill was a natural otc arthritic vitamin type pill, [antiflammatory]the natural way! Ok well i didnt find out until i went to the Emergency room 5 times in 2 weeks with contractions and the worse headache of my life each time. see he left about 10-15 pills mixed in that bottle so every few days or more i would get my real vicodan.

I was tested for everything even overseas viruses etc. i was really sick and doctors didnt know why. well anyway a week after i pulled the cotton out pof my bottle and notice different pills in my bottle i read it and it did not say vicodin like my usual, i figured out and i knew who the only addict i know would do something like that while i was pregnant...THATS RIGHT MY DAD.

so i was going thru withdraw and getting contractions from withdraw and my doctors where not worried about effects of any of these strong medicines i was on,,,BUT THEY WHERE REAALY WORRIED ABOUT THIS OTC DRUG HE GAVE ME.... ANTI FLAMMATORIES THEY HAD IN THEM. they made my dads wife bring the bottle with the ingredients sent the pills to a lab. it was a disaster..

I was so embarrassed alls the doctor said to me is why would your father take your pills?? A nd i sat there crying because he is a junky i guess and dont care that he almost made me lose my child.

so all medicine there are side effects not just what you are taking. Find a caring, good obgyn to talk to , tell them you need to space in more time for an appointment for an important consultation and tell them how you feel about abortion and how you can work around your medicines due to your chronic pain. please let me know how you make out. I know this must be killing you. i am in your shoes too.

As long as you are being monitored on medication you and your doctor agrees upon and weighs the risks for you and baby, you will feel your doing the right thing either way.

BTW... I like being pregnant because back pain is a bit** and i get it for no reason like most out of the blue all day... NOW you have a reason to have it. well it just feels like it should be there because your carrying a heavy baby.

my back didnt get worse after the baby it actually improved somewhat, but about 5 months ago i got cervical problems now due to a ruptured disc after taking a vacation with 3 toddlers plus i was exercising with weights so i dont know what happen. but then again same with the lower back it just came on and i been chronic for over 5 years now.

good luck, i hope to hear from you soon, please cheer up, i felt so compelled to post here to you as a friend on this post told me about your problem.

    dawn

Thank you for sharing this with us and giving us the opportunity to pray for you and your family. You are very brave, sweetie! Take care and keep us posted!

  • hello,
I hope to see you back on here soon. I had an appointment today at my obgyn. Ultrasound looks great, baby heartbeat all look good.

I seen a new doctor in the practice a young female obgyn, told her my concerns about all the xrays and test i had, she said it would of wiped out the pregnancy already if it caused damage in those kind of test.[meaning miscarriage]
She said it all looks great.

I again asked as my husband did which he said to the doctor she is on alot of medication for pain for her back. Again this doctor did not blink an eye just said i know, we diacussed my prior pre term she said they would check my cervix and maybe stitch it or give me weekly progestorone shots to go full term if they think i am at risk due to having a prior preterm but she said in reality it wasnt thAT early my husband asked, she said any thing under 37 weeks is concidered preterm so it wasnt that early 6weeks, she said 28-32 is dangerous due to lungs not mature and such.

We asked one more time about the medicine i asked if i should cut down and she said your fine, the baby looks great. I dont know your situation but my obgyn is thae same one i been going to for 12 years so they know me way before i got pregnant with my son for check ups and pre cancerous cells on my cervix, So they know i have severe back pain and also panic disorder, So maybe thats why they dont care about the medicine. because they know me and i need it.

Is your obgyn the same as your other pregnancies? D o you discuss your other medical [pain] issues with them? i am just so curious, im sorry. I just cant believe you were told to have an abortion, i feel so bad for you.

BTW... this was the 3rd doctor i seen during this 7 week pregnancy and all 3 did not say anything about my medicine. you may have to keep in mind some of your medicine may need some subsitution to safer ones, such as your cymbalta. please keep in good spirits it is a holiday and you must be strong for your other children.

If you need to talk please private message me. I am here for you.

    DAWN
  • like i said before and what i worry about most is that your baby might come out going through withdrawl symptoms by your use of pain meds. have you talked this out with your dr? there are all sorts of documentation of babies going through withdrawls when moms take narcotics. i don't know of dosage or amounts or what you take but this might be something you want to discuss. being a special ed teacher i also worry about baby being under developed and being prone to have learning disabilities. there is no prof that i am aware of but i think some meds cause learning disabilities. these are serious issues that i would bring up. dealing with kids with disabilities is tough.
good luck and please talk about this with dr

I have not been online much lately due to some spinal flareups, but when I read this thread and came on the post by that person, I was outraged.
I am glad that Paul took immediate care of that.
I just finished sending this person a message, very bluntly,
IF that behavior continues they will be Immediately banned from Spine-Health.
There is no room for the likes of that person
