Groin Pain

Hello everyone.

I have had low back pain for the last 13 years due to degenerating disks. I have been to numerous doctors over the years but none has offered a solution. I have used a fentanyl patch for the last eight years for the pain. About three years ago I developed a bulge at L4-L5. This caused pain in the right side of my groin. The pain is always there but tends to be worse at the end of the day. This problem is driving me nuts, not only because it hurts but because it makes sex painful. This is an embarrassing problem so I haven't done much about it, other than complain to my primary care doc. She had me try Lyrica but I could't tolerate the side effects. Other than drugs, she hasn't had anything to offer. Has anyone had a problem like this, and if so, what helped? I will be grateful for any suggestions.

  • Have you been to a pain management Dr? Also what does the Orthosurgeon or Neuro say about the Pain? I had 3 epidurals and some of my groin pain was relieved. I also think Flexeril helps. Maybe physio may help if okayed by your Dr. Charry
DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • Thanks charry. I have seen several pain management docs over the years but none for this problem specifically. I had a series of epidurals three years ago for the back pain and none helped. This problem had just started then. I'm not seeing any specialists right now. My MRI only shows a small bulge at L-4-L5, though a diskogram indicated painfuls disks at L4-L5 and L5-S1. The L5-S1 site has been painful for years, even though the MRI doesn't show much. My primary care doc says there's nothing I can do for the disk problems other than have the disks removed, but I don't think that's true.
  • with the arthritis in my facet joints. I did have surgery last year because I had an annular tare. That surgery did help with the leg and groin pain. I have rhizotomys yearly to help with my facet arthritis and it also seems to help my groin pain. You really should talk to your PM doc about it. If it is nerve pain (which I believe that it is) maybe another type of nerve pain med may help. Good luck and keep us posted.
  • Thanks painintheback.

I have an annular tear at L-5-S1. Maybe that's causing the problem. I have an appointment with my PM today and will ask her about that. What type of surgery did you have for your tear? Also, what is rhizotomys?

    Thank-you.
