I am going to see a Spine Specialist and have them check me for Facet Joint Syndrome and AS. I poated a previous comment and many have responded back with great information. Does anyone have major back pain when you lie down in bed. My Lower Back burns so bad when I lie down in Bed which makes it so hard to lie down or even turn over in Bed. When I get up from Bed it's even worse. My back locks into a spasm hunched over until I am able to get back to normal but the pain is Bad. If you have been diagnoses with this AS or Facet Joint Syndrome. Or have these types of symptoms please explain how you feel. All your replies have been Great. Thanks All for giving me a new light on my condition.

  • Please keep in mind that the people here on Spine Health were giving you suggestions as to what may be causing your pain. You questioned in your other post as to what could be wrong with you,but nobody here is able to give you a diagnoses into your medical condition.

Here is a link that may help you find some answers for your type of pain.

  • Thats good you're seeing the spine Specialist. I hope they help you with your pain. My back burns too at times, I had facet injections Dec.6 and an epidural to help with sciatica from the herniated disc and my back still hurts but my movement is better. I have flexeril as a muscle relaxant I take 3X day. Heat pad is also soothing but don't leave it turned on when you go to bed of course. I also use my desk chair to get out of bed to ease the strain. Take care and have a great week. Charry
DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • Hi :H

I have not been diagnosed with any of those conditions, just DDD, and disc bulging with neural foraminal encroachment etc.

I do get horrible burning pains when I lay or sit down after doing something (cooking, cleaning bending over etc). I was totally puzzled by this because everyone else i talk to, including doctors always say that pain should be relieved by lying down.

Is your pain localized to just your back when you lay down? For me the burning is in my low back as well as my hips, and down my legs.
  • i get burning, and ive got a severly degenerated disk L5, which im waiting for TLIF spinal fusion for. it burns right in the small of my back, and it sometimes radiates to my left hip also, and i get pain and a dead feeling down my left buttock and leg
  • oh...i meant to say, my back locks when i get out of bed, and i take ages to straighten up, at this time i cant lift my feet more than a tiny bit off the floor, and cant use my back muscles to get off the bed, have to pull myself using my arms instead
  • Wether I lay on my stomach, back, something about getting up seems to paralyze me, (Not Literal) but I feel paralyzed with pain,, even if I get up after 5 minutes,, Something about laying down & then getting up. I remain hunched over in Pain of Course unable to straighten up.
If I lay down for a longer pereod of time, Like during Bedtime it starts to burn, My low back only,, It feels like crushed bones on fire, Usually wakes me around 2am-3am, until morning, Then when I get out of Bed, It's normal again. I have back pain but it's bearable,,
Just getting up from laying down or laying down for longer pereods causes Pain.
MRI shows: Epidural Disc Bulge, Moderate Disc Degeneration L1-L4,, Moderately Severe Disc Degeneration L5-S1
    Shows no Nerve Damage...
  • Now only if I stand or walk a long time that pain comes, Sometimes when I'm sitting but more when I walk.
It's wierd I usto have that Leg/Thigh Pain alot, Now only every once in a while,,
This Site is awsome, After 3 Drs. Nobody gave me any answers as to what it could be,, or they never said they heard of my type of symptoms,,, I posted this subject and many helpful people responded and gave me very helpful info.
  • I asked my primary Dr. to do a facet joint block test,,,, She told me only Spine Specialist could do that,, & they wouldn't see me until I First go to Physical Therapy. Then if that dosn't help, We would put in another referral to be seen.. I was frustrated and felt alone, 6yrs ago Physical Therapy didn't help,,, In fact they hurt me with the traction machine,, and I had a severe muscle spasm,,,, I couldnt move, They weren't even helpful (young girl) I called my husband crying to come get me, It took me about an hr to get up and walk to the car. I asked for Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or something, they said they were all out. Eventually my pain went away.. Until Recently 6yrs later It came back,, But Hard..
My neurologist I guess had the pull, He reffered me and they called a couple of weeks later and made an appt. without they Physical Therapy,, I did make an appt though to try P.T again,, we'll see.. Thanks for your concern..
  • the Drowsiness? I take it right before bed, and thats only if it's real Bad,,, I take Relafin 2xday.
They prescribed me Baclofen(muscle relaxer) & that really helped me & it dosn't have the drowsy feeling,, But it gave me nightmares (really sleep paralysis)
Everything has some type of side effect..
How do you cope with feeling drowsy with Flexeril?
  • It's so amazing though I looked everywhere on line,, Talked to my Dr. a Neurologist,, I explained all my Symptoms, They looked st me puzzled & said I never heard of getting Pain when you lie down,,, It should make you feel better,,
I post my info here,, I got so many responses back with their suggestions. I heard for the first time Facet Joint or Ankylosing Spondylo.. I researched both conditions & BAM My symptoms came up,,, Couldn't find it before but with everyones expertise and experience,, I found a condition I with symptoms I couldn't find before.. It gave me a Hope that I might just be diagnosed with something, I thought I was the only one,, with my type of Pain. (Pain when getting up from Laying down)
    Thank You for your Support.
  • Have any of you had a discogram. It is painful but was the only thing that found my problem. Annular tears in 2 discs and tears in the 3rd. Mri's Ct"s and Myleogram dont always catch small tears. But my Dr said a tear is a tear. Dont matter resulting pain is same.
  • It is done by pain specialist. It is where they test your discs for tears and damage. You should ask your Dr about it.
