New guy in Michigan

New guy here....just found this place. I am 35, married with 4 kids. I originally injured my back in 1996. No one would do an MRI all they did was xrays. I kept getting everything looks good. Well Dec 16th I finally got them to give me an MRI. What the MRI showed was (4) Herniated discs in various places of my back, (4) Bulging discs in various places. Disc degeneration, steninosis and a few other things I don't have handy. Now I have a quick question for ya here. Will I ever get better? They are recommending surgery, because one of the herniated discs is pushing on my spinal cord. I also have an annular tear on one of the herniated discs too.

  • Well, if you've had this for 12 years and aren't better yet, I don't think I'd count on getting better anytime soon if nothing is done. I can't believe your docs didn't properly treat you earlier than that!!

I understand that the majority of herniated discs go undiagnosed and eventually heal, but if you have had ongoing problems and now annular tears, etc.? Having a disc pushing on your spinal canal can be a very serious issue and needs to be watched/addressed.

What surgery did they recommend? A multi-level fusion?

Welcome to Spine Health and good luck with your decisions you will be making soon,

  • Right now I am waiting on appointments with to other Drs for second opinions. But from some of the research I do it says I will continue to get worse and others say it will get better. I am so confused.
  • :) hi and welcome to the forum! :H we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. sounds like you need to do some homework. check at the top of the forum under "Treatments" and "Conditions." you can get a good look at what you are dealing with in easy to understand lay terms. =D> have a look around the forums and please make yourself at home. good luck as you search for pain relief. :D Jenny :)
  • I am so sorry that much of your young life has been spent in this type of pain. I have not had a fusion but have had an endoscopic microdiscectomy for an annular tare. I understand how confusing all of this can be. Surgery should be taking seriously and it looks like you are doing your research. It is great to get a couple more opinions but it sounds like there may be no other option besides surgery for you. I think that is pretty serious business when the disc is compressing the spinal cord. Good luck to you and please keep us posted.
  • It is kinda comical that some Drs don't think anything major is wrong and other Drs are like Don't do this, this and this and we need to get this fixed ASAP. I should know within the next when my specialist appointments are. Hopefully then I can get some answers. Work is kinda holding their breath.....they seem to think that I will not be returning if I go for the surgery......I still want to work, I wonder if my body will let me.
  • There are plenty of folks that have been able to go on with their life after surgery. Keep a positive attitude.
