Hi. I'm new here. I posted earlier today, but don't see it anywhere, so will post again. I am about 3 weeks from having ACDF surgery and am very nervous. I am choosing to use my own bone for the graft as I think it'll be better long term. But I wanted to know if the hospital stay is longer than using donor bone, and if so, how much longer? Is the pain really that much worse from the donor site vs. the actual surgical site? Also, what about the problems I hear about post-surgery with swallowing, hoarseness, pain, etc? I have major problems with pain meds, I either get violently ill or they do nothing to relieve pain for me. My NS sent me to a pain specialist, who recommended Oxycontin. I'm worried about that because of prior reactions to related meds, not to mention all the bad things I've heard about the drug. Also, how long realistically will I need help at home before I'm able to take at least minimal care of things myself? I have no children at home anymore, and my DH is going to stay home to care for me. Thank-you for any help, advice, relating your experiences, etc.
