Hi there. I have been searching all over the internet to find things that will help my brother. my brother had a spinal fusion last week on his L3, L4 and L5. He was released after 2 days in the hospital. a couple of days ago, he started having cold sweats-sweat was just pouring from his forehead, he was pale, as white as a ghost, he was dry heaving, it was not good. his wife took him into the E.R. and said he had a Vaso-occlusive episode from the pain and that he has a spinal leak. He is struggling with headaches and depression amongst his back pain ofcourse. the worst thing he says is his neck. is that common to have neck pain??? any suggestions to help him??? comfort him??? I am with him during the day while his wife is at work. He is incredibly depressed as well. anyways, he is currently having to lay flat on his back and only get up to use the bathroom. i would love it if anyone can share your stories-if you have gone through anything like he has gone through, and how you overcame it? any suggestions about the neck pain and such???? please help..i would greatly appreciate it.

  • It is not common to have spinal leaks after a fusion! The characteristic of a spinal leak is a severe headache that gets better as soon as you lie down, then when you sit up or stand you feel like your head is going to explode - there is a very easy treatment for spinal leaks called a blood patch...But if the ER said he had a spinal leak, and he has neck pain & sweats I hope he doesn't have meningitis - did they do a spinal tap in the ER? Make sure he isn't running a fever but I would definitely let his surgeon know about his symptoms - that could be very serious. Are his eyes sensitive to bright light? A lot of people get sweats, esp. around the forehead, along with dry heaving as a side effect of the strong narcotics prescribed for the pain. Has he tried a heating pad on the neck?
