Has Anyone Ever Had an Alergic Reaction to The Bone Graft??

I went to my Doctor yesterday because I was concerned that I was feeling worse instead of better, with new x rays and he said everything looked great. So why am I feeling this way and he said it's going to take time to heal because I had this problem for a long time, 2 1/2 yrs, before having the surgery and damage was done. Every question I wanted to ask him I forgot bc I didn't write them down.
The thing that is confusing to me, is that I was starting to feel a little bit better every day and then boom....it stopped getting better and started to feel worse. I rested for a week to see if this would help, but it hasn't. I read in another post that this person became alergic to the bone graft and was experiencing pain after a month, like me, so now I'm wondering if this could be it. First I was concerned it could be the hardware and find it's not, so now I'm thinking, could it be an alergic reaction.
Everyone knows his own body and I could just sense that what I'm feeling is not normal......has anyone out there ever had this happen to them and if so, what did it feel like?
Thanks so much.....

I had a negitive outcome from my cadaver bone implant. At about 6 weeks I knew something was wrong. Finally at over a year post surgical they finally admitted that I had non-union (No fusion) and that the cadaver chunk had actually impacted itself down into the vertabrae. Not the desired outcome. At 1.5 years post 3 level ACDF they had to redo the whole shabang. They removed the 2 "donor" chunks and replaced them with my own beloved hip bone (Crest of the iliac actually - not really hip). I had fusion within 6 weeks. 4 level with posterior rods. 8 months post second surgery and symptoms have returned ... There's as reason it's called DDD.

If you feel the something is not right .... get it evaluated agressively by a surgeon other than the original.

  • had the BMP with my 2nd surgery and never fused. I had it with my 3rd surgery and have had a beautiful fusion. I don't know how they would tell if you were allergic, but I would definitely pursue it.

I had pain, but of course, mine was the permanent nerve damage that had been "temporarily" relieved from all the medications during surgery. It was almost a full year before I had that confirmed with the EMG.

Good luck with what you find,
