Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to read, and apologise if it's been discussed before, I have tried to find other threads.

Like you all, I have a lot of pain, and have been trying self help excercies, that invlove head tilting, up and down and side to side, and I do them gently and stop if it hurts.....and that happens a lot.

I hear and feel, all this creaking, crunching and grinding noises when I try the excercies.

1. Is this normal for all us with Cspine probs?
2, Is it making it worse or doing any damage
3, In your own opinions, should I stop? or ignore it and carry on regardless?

Thanks for all you help, befriending, and support, I think you are all brilliant.

Crepitus: A clinical sign in medicine characterized by a peculiar crackling, crinkly, or grating feeling or sound under the skin, around the lungs, or in the joints.

Crepitus in soft tissues is often due to gas, most often air, that has penetrated and infiltrated an area where it should not normally be, as for example the soft tissues beneath the skin (a condition called subcutaneous emphysema). Crepitus in a joint can represent cartilage wear in the joint space.

The term "crepitus" is taken directly from the Latin "crepitus" meaning "a crackling sound or rattle."

    1. Is this normal for all us with Cspine probs?

    Yes in abnormal Spines

2, Is it making it worse or doing any damage

Could be ... check with your doctor(s)

3, In your own opinions, should I stop? or ignore it and carry on regardless?

If it hurts .... stop doing it .... check with your doctor ... if caused by bone on bone it can be doing additional damage.

The sound can be created when two rough surfaces in the human body come into contact - for example, in osteoarthritis when the cartilage around joints has eroded away and the joint ends grind against one another, or when the fracture surfaces of two broken bones rub together.

  • Hi,

I am also a friend of Bill W. Dec 9th I hadC4-7 Anterior cervical diskectomy, fusion, partial copectomy & instrumentation. The surgery took six hours due to a lot of bone spurs he cut and file. This week the pain behind my right shoulder blade has gotten bad, 9-10 pain. I see the doctor Jan. 23 for a xray and see if my bones has started to fusison. I called the doctor Monday and they said this in normal keep takng the pain med's. I was told from the start I would be off work about six weeks, I feel as if I have gotten worse not better...The problem I had before the surgery is gone, now I have the neck muscle and should blade pain.
  • I have been dealing with this same thing for 7 years and at my age of 38 all i get is it's gass. I just have a question for all you doctors out there, If i have gass there will be a poping sound and the pain subsides, dealing with mechanics i found that a grind is usauly two or more carbon based properties are scraping without lubrication and the more you move the more it hurts. And at this point I have to say your wrong. Gas builds up in the joints and there is cushin between those joints and there is no way there would be a grind just like your struts hold up the body to prevent the tires from rubbing in the tire wells(filled with gass) no gass in the struts the tire rubs. Find other theories, gas is not the answer. I have other theories, email me for more info
  • I have had cervical fusion 15 months ago 5/6 6/7. I have muscle spasms that can be just debilitating. I also have grinding and cracking sounds. My surgeon looked my exrays today. said Im fused solid hardwear looks good. He did mention a bone spur right above my plate. It may be rubbing. He seems to down play my pain. He got realy mad when he found out I am on disability.I am 52 years old. Cant sit for too long with out pain. Is there any one else out there this far out of surgery that is still in pain? I feel like he thinks Im lieing about all this pain. I wish I was!! Am I dealing with a young doctors ego here? He would not let me finish asking any more questions. What to do?
