After a long and treacherous road, I finally got my PICC line out yesterday! After three months of IV antibiotics for my spinal infection, it's finally over. My sed rate and CRP are back to normal. My MRI still looks bad but the doc says it'll take awhile for that to show improvement because it takes time for the bone to regenerate after it's been eaten up by infection.
I can't tell you all how excited I am to have that PICC gone! It's also strange though, because I've grown accustomed to having it hanging from my arm for the last several months. I can actually take a shower tonight without having to cover my arm in plastic. Woohoo!
Also, the biggest improvement I've noticed since surgery is that I no longer have bladder incontinence. It's completely resolved! I told my neurosurgeon about that and he said that I must have had cauda equina syndrome because of the double herniation. Looking back now, I can't believe I was dealing with the incontinence for months and just thought it was my 40-something year old bladder giving out, which happens to so many women. Now I find out that it was neurological all along. My gyn had actually referred me to a urologist/gyn to be worked up for possible bladder surgery. But I never got around to going because it was shortly after that, that I completely blew out my back and had to have surgery.
I'm so thrilled that this may be finally over. I just hope and pray that the infection is truly gone and doesn't come back.
