:/ Does anyone know if a Tarlov Cyst is the result of surgery gone wrong? My first surgery was for a L4/L5 compression with a thecal cyst on the facet joint. Then 3 weeks later my incision swelled up like a water balloon and my head felt like it had a vise around it as soon as I sat up. The surgeons assistant sent me for an MRI on my neck and finally after severe pain for another couple of weeks!-I demanded the surgeon and he figured out I had spinal fluid leakage. So off to surgery again. A "splinter" of bone had penetrated into the outer layer of the spinal cord and caused this to happen. Hmmm. :? Then about 7 weeks after that, my tailbone area started hurting. Surgeon recommends starting pt. Probably from sitting around too much. PT only seems to make it worse and now I am only on my side most of time cause standing, walking, sitting and OMG SNEEZing! Kills! MRI is ordered and surgeon and pain doctor both say "can't see anything that would be causing this", however the MRI report states a Tarlov Cyst. Thank god for the internet-cause I have to do my own research and diagnosis. I am having a cortizone shot tomorrow for pain even though they are not sure why! Make sense to you??? Please let me know your comments if you have been going through this horrible and debilitating pain.

  • I will check the previous MRI's. I got copies of everything from the hospital and doctors for short term disability. Thanks for the info,it's unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be much available. I am now interviewing for a job and I am scared that I will not be able to perform it. My last company laid me off while I was out from my back surgery. Let me know if you find out any updates and good luck with your trouble as well. Being in constant pain is difficult and luckily I have an understanding and loving husband.....
  • that was found during a MRI while monitoring my lower back pain. My pain management doctor, both ortho surgeons, and both neurosurgeons that I've seen due to my disk problems all blow it off as uneventful and asymptomatic. I don't know if it is contributing to my pain or not because I also have DDD, herniated disks, etc which give the same pain symptoms as that cyst would (if it is indeed causing problems)...so I don't know. I was also told that there would be a good chance of it coming back if I were to have it removed...and they said that it would be a complicated surgery due to its location...so who knows???
  • Have you been able to find any over the counter products that provide relief? Please let me know....

Thank you for your input and comments. Sorry to hear you are going through so much and :-C here's to feeling better!
  • I just had a L4-L5 fusion three weeks ago to take care of the ,ost pressing problem. I've got other stuff going on back there in addition, so I can't really tell if the cyst is producing any symptoms or not. I think that I also have some stuff going on with my right SI joint, but we'll see down the road when I can gauge my pain/problems after I (hopefully) fuse some and my surgery pain totally disappears. All of the specialists that I've consulted with have blown off my concerns about my cyst...
