For those who experience "back lock up".....

My back locks up all the time. I have not had an opportunity to ask my surgeon about this. I have not had my surgery yet either.

My question is, have any of you asked your docs why this happens? My disk is gone, I am completely bone on bone, at L5 S1.

My range of motion is so limited because if I move even the slightest wrong way I am in so much pain.

Thanks everyone!!!

  • Caity,

That's a good question and I have the same thing. I hope someone can shed some light. I'll be asking my doc when I go back to the doctor in the next couple of weeks. I can totally relate to the pain. I walk in such a straight, upright motion because one wrong move could cause pain that brings me to my knees.

    39 year old
    Microdiskectomy/laminotomy 8/07 at L5/S1
Same surgery at L5/S1 and L4 on 2/08
and several epidurals and PT sessions that did not work throughout the years
    fusion/ADR to be determined...
  • I'm not sure if it's an actual locking of the back or just the body's response to try and stop the pain. I freaked my sisters (and myself) out last summer just reaching for a cherry when we were sitting pitting cherries. I happened three times in that afternoon. I just could not move. I haven't had that problem since surgery, but there are so many other problems now, I don't know if this compensates for them.

    3 level spinal fusion, L3/4, L4/5, L5/S1, November 2008. Stiff, but I can walk.
  • hello, i think what i get may be similar to your back lock up, and i have asked about it.

Im waiting for Tlif fusion surgery of l5 s1 which im getting in a month (it was actually marked as urgent, and supposed to be done feb 9 but im having shower put in and new kitchen this month and wanted that done first!)

What i get is when i get up from bed sometimes, my back locks and it takes ages to stand up straight(ish) and once up, my legs wont lift off the floor more than a tiny bit, i kind of have to shuffle for a bit. it gets easier as i move around though, and can be gone more or less in an hour, even though still stiff.

I told surgeon about it when describing my symptoms and he said it certainly sounds mechanical, and that is the reason for my surgery, so it should be put right with the op....hope this helps, it seems its all part of the problem!

severely degenerate disc L5 - S1, with annular tear and bulge, and facet joint problems..2 year old fracture L5 and disc problem associated with that, which doc isnt doing anything about at this point, as doesnt seem to be bulging, yet pain with it like i feel my spine cant hold me up on its own...mri scan shows that disc and bone like a very wiggly line, dont know what that means, looks like up and down zig zags..
  • for all you input! It's just so terrible.... Not only does my back lock up, but so do my hips as well. It's so painful! I never know when it's going to strike either. Oh well....

    Thanks again!!!!

  • I have'nt had it happen in a while but sometimes when I try to get up or move a certain way, my right side "locks up".
It is intense & sudden pain & I cannot move until it subsides usually within a minute or so...I have to lay down flat to get it to settle(??)
I believe it is my right SI joint & not necessarily related to the disc. I had a ESI in that joint and haven't had it happen since.
  • yesterday and he didn't really give me a straight answer. :/ I'm going to get an epi at my L5 joint/nerve, and he said we will see what happens from there. He said I am definitely bone on bone, and that would cause a lot of what I am going through.

He is doing another MRI to see exactly what is going on in there, so that's good. :)
