Anyone on Social Security Disability because of lumber spinal fusion? How long did you wait to file for disability insurance after your surgery. Is it worth it or not?
I had surgery Nov 18, and I am having alot of problems with pain and sitting, since my surgery and my employer has not been understanding, they expect me to be back working in the shape that I am in.

  • My company requires me to use all vacation and paid time off first. STD kicks in after 30 days off, pays 50% of my salary up to 1000.00 max a week. FMLA requires them to give you 3 months off with no hassle. After that, depends on your employer. I went back to work 5 weeks after a L3-S1 Anterior/Posterior Fusion because I could not afford to be off work. I am the only breadwinner and STD would not cover our family's bills. Grin and Bear it for me. I've been back to work for a month and each weak is easier. But still not easy if you know what I mean.
  • Do you mean private insurance or social security disability?
  • I mean social security disability.
  • you need to file asap if you are disabled, but you have to be expected to be disabled at least 12 months, it is always best to file and let them tell you if you qualify. But its best to get all your records from every dr who has treated you, hospital records any type of record that is associated with your condition. Not having this info can delay your decision.
I applied on 10-24-08,using an attorney and havent heard anything yet, they tell you it can take 3 -5 mos for a decision. But there are some post here where people have applied and got a decision in 2 months.
Just be prepared to have all records and be honest, if you are married or have girlfriend or other friend have them write a letter explaining how your condition has affected your everyday life. Like things you cant do any longer, be specific like fixing meals, needing help getting dressed or taking a shower, and submit this letter to SS.
Good luck to you and hope your pain is low.
