I have been to two other surgerons to see if they will operate on my back. I've got three Herinated Disc and they hurt like all get out. I can't sleep, walk, sit, stand much, drive, or do anything else like a normal human can. I can't even pick up my small 20lb baby girl Doxie. Its sad and I want something done about it! I went back to dr and asked him to refer me to EDITED for a consult.

I was wondering will they put screws and rods in my back the disc that are affect are L-4-, L-5 and S-1. I have huge pain up and down my legs at the monent I have a knot at my tail bone he told me not to worry but my swelling is getting much more and I have severe shooting pain in my left hip close to my tail bone. What will they do I want to look up some info on what I might be getting before he tells me. I was told by other drs that they couldn't operate on me due to it being the last 3 disc and the others might become worse over time. I told them why are they keeping me in pain then? So I asked another dr the same thing I was told the samething. Well I gotta go talk later.

Any suggestions will help.

  • With that many discs involved, it is entirely possible that you will need a fusion. If you look on the internet for lumbar fusion, you will find tons of information...including very good info on this website.

A fusion is done a number of ways...from the back (PLIF), from the front (ALIF), two surgeries done at once, from front and back, commonly referred to as "360" and sometimes it is done from the side, (TLIF).

The important thing is the selection of your doctor. You will want to see a fellowship-trained spinal specialist, either an orthopedic surgeon whose practice is limited to the spine, or a neurosurgeon. The fellowship training is what is most important. You will want to get several opinions as you will find that there may be more than one way to approach your problem. Perhaps you might be a candidate for disc replacement rather than having a fusion...and maybe you can get by with a procedure known as discectomy. Regardless, spine surgery is a big deal and you will want to know that you have selected the best person for your condition.

Many people on this board have had these surgeries, so be sure to ask questions and learn as much as you can before making a decision.
