When you are in search of a doctor to take control of your situation?

I think each of us have their own feelings about this, there is nothing right nor nothing wrong.

For me, I have found the perfect doctor to manage my situation.

- Understanding
- Compassionate
- Willing to explain things over and over
- Tough (will tell you when you are wrong)
- Availability
- Candid and Upfront and Honest
- Cost

What is it that you are looking for?

  • i would say,Understanding and Compassionate, and Caring would be my top things i would look for in a Doctor.....
  • I look for doctors that don't presume to "take control" of my situation. ;)

Seriously - one of the most important factors to me is a doctor that believes patients have the right and obligation to fully participate in their own health care.
  • I want an understanding and compassionate doctor who will listen to me and take me seriously and not make assumptions. I also want one who will be tough when it comes to making the tough decisions that I alone am unable to make alone. I may want to do a particular exercise or try a new therapy but I want the doctor who stands up and tells me that it won't help or it's a waste of time.
  • I agree with Tonya, I loved the PM in Pittsburgh I saw for a second opinion. He answered every question I had and flat out told me what I needed to hear! It made it much easier to stand up to my PM here and my PCP. The PM in Pittsburgh had read all my chart, looked at my MRIs and CTs clear back to the time of accident. He had taken the time to be informed about my case before I even walked in the door!

What I don't want is the doc who walks in holding my chart, leafing thru it trying to figure out who this guy in front of him is! X(
  • My doctor is great he handles my workmans comp case worker great and never questions my descriptions of pain and when it came to comp wanting me to go back to work he put it plain and simple " They want you off their payroll I'm concered about your health so no work end of story". Which made me glad that he really believes me and my description of pain.
  • The one thing that's hard about seeing a specialist is the understandably tend to just look at their piece of the puzzle. What i want is a doctor/specialist who has the ability to consider the overall you, is understanding, explains things well, patient with me, skilled and experienced in their area of work, approachable, accessible, a doctor who respects me and isn't looking for me to bow to them as the great doctor, and at the same time a doc who tells me what i need to hear. And yes.... I found my doc :-)
