after an RTA it took 10 months for the GP to allow an MRI scan which highlighted herniated discs at L5 causing sciatica and C3/C5 causing pins and needles left arm. After leg stretches sciatica is all but gone . . . . after referal to neurosurgeon he is advising fusion/bone graft at c3 even though my apparent symptoms are fading!!! I am not having any problems with bladder etc even though he reckons my reflexes are somewhat 'brisk'. Diazepam and alcohol work fine and certainly reduce my depressive tendencies and quell my over active imagination. Would you have the Operation????? Be honest because even though I am scared to death I am Still ALIVE!!!!! ( at the moment)

  • Hi Dodger,

Welcome to SH. If your not confident in the neurosurgeons opinon, you can always seek a 2nd opinion with another NS or an orthopaedic surgeon... I'm having a double discectomy C5/6 & C6/7 next week. My decision to have surgery was based on what doc told me about my nerves... I have nerve symptoms in my arm/hand, i'm not responding to conservative tratments... and my mri had severe findings. So in your situation.... i would wonder what your doc said about things like that... There are other options, but its about balancing the risks of surgery, quality of life... and how badly the docs think you need to have the op. Basically, clear as mud!! I'd also agree with paulgla's comment re alcohol and these meds... not a good idea!! really... know i sound like a ninny.. but ... really not a good idea :O

Don't know if that helped or not! Feel free to PM if you like...

    Good luck!

  • hi and welcome to the forum! :H we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. you have been given alot of good advice and so i will just wish you well in whatever decision you make!! <:P please keep us informed.. :D Jenny :)
  • No, I would not. But, that is my own personal opinion. I have seen way to many failed fusions where the pain is worse after surgery. I would have to be unable to move to consider a fusion. Remember that is just my own personal opinion.
